This is tough! I think it depends on your personal style, needs, and which one calls to you more. I don’t have the Alma but I DO have the Balenciaga; I have it in two sizes actually, and I love both. IMHO it is such a great little bag! It is deff more casual and edgy, while the Alma is more dressy and classic. I personally don’t buy bags based on how trendy they are/how long it will be before they’re considered out of style; I just buy what I like and keep wearing it even if they’re no longer popular, haha! So the Balenciaga being potentially less classic isn’t a dealbreaker to me, but I do agree with others that I think the Alma has a more classic look (kind of like the Chanel classic flap), and probably will always be in style more or less. I think it will also work better for fancier events than the Balenciaga can, so it may be a little more versatile.

My vote is for the Alma bb and not because I am biased. Truthfully, I‘m not a big fan of LV or Balenciaga bags. I only own one LV bag and it’s the Alma bb in galet in epi leather. It is a very elegant bag though not the easiest to use imo. I only wear it handheld and not crossbody as it loses the elegant factor when worn crossbody imo.
Additionally, I think the puzzle bag would serve the same purpose as the Balenciaga in your collection.

I like both bags, but the Alma will never go out of style. It’s such a gorgeous bag.

I ended up getting the Alma bb in Epi in Paris - like you I'm not a die hard for LV or Balenciaga but was open to one or two styles from these brands.
I agree with you on the puzzle and neo classic having a similar shape but for me, it would be the size difference (I have the small puzzle and was only considering the neo classic in XS.
