Advice please: First H bag offer but it's Epsom

I did not think I cared for Epsom, so it was not on my wish list. I started with chèvre, then sombrero leather, then togo, which happened to be from an extremely soft thin light batch. But I wanted a K28 sellier and when one came along in gris asphalt, palladium hw, I decided to go for it. I love my K32 sellier in sombrero, but I wanted a 28. It took some adjusting, but I can see the Epsom softening, and it really suits the bag. It would not hold its structure if it were Togo or a softer leather. Overall, it’s a stunning bag and I am glad I got it! The red Kelly sounds beautiful. I can’t imagine that you would not love it and wear it! And if in a year or two you find that you don’t, you can always sell it. But I think you might regret passing it up! It is more durable than some people lead you to believe.

I expect you have a small time window in which to decide.
There is a consensus that if you like Epsom, it would be a good purchase.
If you let this one go, might I suggest that you buy a slg in Epsom (Bastia or Calvi) and use it every day,
so that you will have first hand experience of Epsom and can better come to your own conclusion about it.

I'm personally not a fan of Epsom but if you've felt it and liked it, it is as all have noted the leather for 90%+ of production sellier Kellys. Epsom can make for a beautiful bag.
I'm going to add though that it is NOT true that other leathers don't hold the sellier shape. They absolutely do. Selliers have an extra layer to keep them stiff. I have/had selliers in Togo, chèvre, Box, and Barenia and they're all very rigid. So please don't take that into account.
Good luck with your choice :flowers:

This. I have chèvre, box, crinoline and epsom selliers and they are all rigid and some are quite old.

Thank you for your advice, everybody! I decided not to get it. It may sound silly, but felt like I would prefer a more classic leather for such a classic colour. I didn’t have a great deal of time to choose and, ultimately, didn’t want to take what might be somebody else’s perfect bag if I wasn’t 100% sure. I still have reservations about the hand feel of epsom, so will do as @WhiteBus suggests and get an SLG, so that I can test the leather out and see if my opinion changes over time. Thanks again for sharing your experiences!

Good for you! It doesn’t sound silly to prefer the leather you prefer!!! It’s so nice to get feedback and ideas from people here on tpf with lots of experience with different leathers. However, in the end we are the ones buying it and living with it, and for me at this point in my life, if everything isn’t just right for me it’s a hard pass. For those that love epsom - good they know that and buy what they love. H has something for everyone! (Just not always the immediate availability we prefer :P )

I am one of the non-epsom people here, I have a silk’n wallet in it, and though it’s beautiful in color, it doesn’t bring me as much joy as all my other leathers with softer hand. It doesn’t feel good to hold in my hand, and doesn’t even feel or smell much like leather to me. Although Kelly sellier bags do look stunning, they don’t feel the same to me as in other leathers. But I’m (sort of) glad I bought one epsom piece as it truly finished any questions I had about epsom, and I know I wouldn’t be happy with a bag in epsom.

I bet you will get the bag you love, and good for you for listening to yourself after gathering info. It will be worth the wait!!! The leathers we each love are so personal for so many reasons and different kinds of uses so I hope your classic color arrives in just the skin and hw you love soon. :flowers:
