It's part of the paisley, that part of the pattern is just near the top. I wondered the same thing at first!

My BNWT (from Saks 5th Ave) vintage Ocean MAB from Linda's Stuff on eBay. Thanks @Haughty for posting. You are two for two now....this and my GE MAB with FDL!! What can I say about Ocean leather?? OMG.... just the softest RM leather I've ever felt! I'm beyond thrilled with this one!!!! And the crackle gold bottom is a bonus feature!!!
