A diamond chip?

Reminds me of an SA when I was looking at a Chopard ring...he scoffed and said at that price it is just diamond dust and tried to persuade me to purchase a larger piece.

I haven't posted in a while but I just have to say this. That ring is beautiful. Not because of the fact it is tiffanys or the design (both of which are lovely) but the fact of the beautiful sentiment that you love your best friend enough that you took the time to buy her something to mean it. Personally I'm not sure what a Diamond chip is either, but I do know that that ring is beautiful and the sentiment behind it was pure love. May your best friend wear it in good health and you completely disregard that comment from her mother. It's not about her mother it is about your friend.

This is beautifully said by dmitchell15. I echo the sentiment.

A "diamond chip" in this particular instance is an obnoxious and derogatory way of saying "small diamond melee". She's essentially saying it's too small to qualify as a real diamond, which is preposterous.

Hopefully you both will ignore her disgusting comment and enjoy your new piece.

A "chip" is a piece that breaks off a diamond. A piece that just breaks has no shape and won't sparkle. It will look like glass. There is no diamond size or value that makes a diamond a "chip," a chip could be 20 carats if it came off a giant diamond.

The reason people use this term as an insult is they are uneducated and they are incorrectly using "chip" to mean melee.

In the industry, diamonds under .18 carats can also be used as side diamonds or set in bands. They are called "melee." There are some negative associations with melee, because many companies cut costs by choosing lower grade stones for melee since tiny inclusions are hard to see. They sometimes do not cut them properly with 57 facets so the melee does not sparkle.

However that is due to the particular diamonds, not because they are small. Tiffanys round diamonds are all "full cut" with 57 facets, and they don't use low grade diamonds at all. So your diamond IS a diamond. It's not a chip. And it's really nice quality. So please don't feel put down, that was a lovely gift. I know a lot about diamonds and would love to receive something like that.
