2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

August 13 - Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta

August 20 - Burberry, Celine

August 27 - Coach, Chanel

September 3 - Chloe, Dior

September 10 - Dooney & Bourke, Fendi

September 17 - Ferragamo, Givenchy

September 24 - Goyard, Gucci

October 1 - Hermes, Kate Spade

October 8 - Loewe, Longchamp

October 15 - Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs

October 22 - Michael Kors, Miu Miu

My mother bought me that Nice bag - but in Cannes! I don't think Gucci have a store in Nice

Look, I have the matching shies (but never wear together)

Because of that they both remind me of the South of France and not Tuscany (Flora was based on the wild flowers of Tuscany)
Love that you have these and how you wear them

That's a good idea.

I really love seeing other peoples bags and collections. I will have a hard job directing Houdini, he always thinks I'm going to get him to do something terrible - like I'm gonna put him in his pet carrier - which he hates - he is so suspicious.

Totally different to his brother (sadly died 2 years ago  ) who'd jump into any box or bag left unattended for 3 secs. That was him a few years ago, he joined me when I was doing yoga outside

Maybe for the weeks after we can do bags made of different things:
1. Velvet, satin, materials
2. Exotics
3 Non-animal leather
4. Nylon, vinyl or plastic
5. Special leathers like patent, crinkled or washed leather
6. Natural like straw, raffia, bamboo, wood
7. Strangest materials
I love the materials idea. I would add in 8. Metal.

We also have designer showcase, with 30 designers and 4 bonus designers (Cartier, Christian Louboutin, Tiffany, Van Cleef - they do make bags, but 95% of posts on the board are about jewelry/shoes)
If we did two a week, that’s 15 weeks. 16 weeks if we did “Bags by Jewelers” week.

There are 35 Sundays left in the year, and 23-25 collection theme days.

So do we want to do materials over the summer and designers in the fall?
Does anyone want to add anything to the materials list - or the designers list?

May challenges: Let’s get outdoors!
1) Pets with bags
2) drinks with bags.
3) take a picture of your bag outside.
Other shopping/lifestyle challenges ?

Materials June 4 - July 23?

Designer August 16 - Nov 19?

December challenges
1) Festive/holiday bags
2) evening bags
3) Brag on 2023 successes (best bag purchase, best reuse/most carried bag, if you’re proud of your closet cleaning/organizing, sales stats)

Wow, the shoes are gorgeous! Agree about not pairing them with the Flora tote. I am curious to know how you style these? So interesting to know that Flora was based on the wild flowers of Tuscany. I love wild flowers!

This is great!
I was thinking of posing a bag-related group question, but perhaps it could also be a challenge: What is your least used bag and why? (We all have one or more of those in our closet.) Pull it out of the closet and wear it, and share your thoughts about it.

It’s May, it’s May! The Lusty month of May :cue Camelot music:

So, whether we are in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere- it’s a month of changes, transitions, and the last/first reliable month for at least a few days of sunshine and outdoor weather. So, on that idea, our monthly themes are:

  1. Pets and bags! Interpret this as you want - your pet in a bag? Your bag on a pet? Pet rock? Pet horse? Pet dog? This is where we celebrate those we love to care for - and the bags that help us do that.
  2. Drunken bag! Several years back, someone photographed their bag with a pint while they were on vacation in England. I did the same with a pineapple full of rum in Hawaii last year. And then it became a thing. Celebrate being out and about, and photograph your bag with a beverage (alcohol not required!)
  3. It’s nice out (hopefully)! Take a picture outside.
  4. What is your least favorite bag in your collection? Why? Carry it this month!

And then we’re back to showcases!

So what are the showcases?

In summer, we are living in a material world… let’s explore our bag collections by materials!

I hope I am wasting my time by saying this, but caveat time. We are all committed in this thread to ethical consumption. We may disagree on what that means. As a person who loves oceans, I have ethical issues with non-animal leather. I accept that others find it more ethical than traditional leather or exotics. We’re all doing our best. In short,

don’t try to police other people’s ethics. ALSO - some of these are limited categories - don’t feel guilty if you don’t have a bag that qualifies - there’s always another week.

Without further ado…

June 4 - Tribute to textiles! Let’s see your velvet, your satins - maybe even your toile, twill or duck cloth.

June 11 - Exotics can be elegant! Show off your non-domesticated animal leathers, and fur!

June 18 - Non-animal leather luxe! For pleather, cork-leather, mushroom bags - how do you carry off a vegan bag?

June 25 - Treated leathers treat you right! Patent, washed, crinkled… how do you like your leather?

July 2 - Summery (or winter) straw! Straw, raffia, bamboo, wood, wicker showcase!

July 9 - Marvelous metal!

July 23 - Life in plastic, it’s fantastic! Nylon, vinyl, seatbelt, acrylic all deserve their week to shine!

July 30 - Strangest materials. Surprise me!

Then let’s take a week off, and then start the Designer Showcase!

August 13 - Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta

August 20 - Burberry, Celine

August 27 - Coach, Chanel

September 3 - Chloe, Dior

I was going to suggest something similar - bags made of different materials.
