Yes, I think it's considered a smooth leather. Or at least a very fine grained leather.
I don't really have issues or concerns with wear and tear. I'm relatively new to smooth leather bags and that was a concern that held me back from buying them for years. But I took the plunge last year with this bag and haven't had any issues.
However, I'm not a particularly picky or detail oriented person and I do not baby my bags.
There are very minor scuffs on it but unless someone looked at it closely, they're not that noticeable to me.
This is one of the few bags I will not put on the ground (others I don't mind, especially if they have feet). That's my way of being more careful I guess lol.
I wear it pretty much whenever. It's not a go-to evening bag for more formal events. (would not take it to a red carpet, gala or evening wedding) But I will take it on a casual night out like dinner with friends or date with the husband depending on the restaurant and my outfit.
It is something you do kind of need to keep on your lap though (if there's no where to put it) and make sure it doesn't slip due to the smooth texture. But I have no problem leaving it on a chair next to me, hanging on a hook (some dining tables have that), or taking the more long "couch" benches to put it on.
