Should Prostitution Be Legal ?

In an ideal world, I think prostitution should be illegal but at least, if it is legalized, then perhaps better social protection could be afforded to prostitutes.
And it could go a long way towards halting violent crimes against them, which go unreported for fear of being jailed for being prostitutes.

Those in Holland are indeed sex workers who have rights and obligations, where as the vast majority of undeclared women (and unfortunatly girls) elsewhere are victims being exploited.

Thats exactly my thinking, and I couldn't have said it better myself!

Very interesting how legalized Prostitution works in Nevada.

-State Law requires Prostitutes to have weekly checkups and testing for STDS and monthly HIV tests.
-Condom use is Mandatory
-According to the CDC since the 1986 institution of mandatory testing and condom use, not a single brothel prostitute in Nevada has ever tested positive for HIV.

Agreed. The very least that can be done for these women and men is to protect them from those who would prey upon them -- and also to help stem the transmission of diseases. The wider issues of health and life should come before the moral issue of "is prostitution okay".

Yes I think it should be legal.

While I personally do not plan to be a prostitute or use one, I don't think it's my right or the govn't's right to legislate my values on other people. If it is legalized and regulated, as in the brothels in Nevada, it is safer for everyone involved (regular testing for communicable diseases/AIDS/HIV, overall health, liscensed).

i too agree that it should be legalized.

I think it should be legal. As long as the women are doing it of their free will, more power to them. We already allow stripping, prostitution in some states, and of course porn. For the most part, these women are choosing to do these things with their body. So that's my opinion on it.

I totally think it should be legalized and regulated. Nobody should tell anybody else what to do with their bodies. This country is so far behind other countries when it comes to sex. They show murders everyday on the news, but show a nipple and it's anarchy.

I feel uncomfortable saying prostitution should be legalized. (Although I can't really see a valid reason for keeping prostitution illegal, either). But the working girls in the legallized Nevada brothels seem happy and healthy. It's not a lifestyle that a girl should aspire to, but if it were the last resort, the legalized brothels seem like the most ideal.

I think that if it were going to be legalized, it should be regulated.

It already is legal in Las Vegas. There's actually a show on HBO showing real life legal prostitution.
Cathouse! I LOVE that show! (It profiles the Moonlite Bunny Ranch.)

They don't like to be called whores, they don't like to be called hookers, they prefer to be called working girls.

Dennis Hof, the owner, isn't a "B:censor: tch! [smack] Where's my money?" type of pimp. It would be wierd describing him as a father figure, but he really cares about the well-being of the girls. If the girls don't want to perform a particular act, then she doesn't have to do it, and she doesn't have to make up the money lost. The house doesn't take all the girl's money. They take half and the girls pay a little bit of rent each month.

This is actually written by Dennis Hof. It's about the difference between prostitutes on the streets and legalized brothels.

It's very informative.

Definitely legalised, but not to the extent that jobless women are denied state support if they don't take a "job" in a brothel! UK unemployment money ("jobseekers allowance") is stopped if you refuse an offer of work and silly as it sounds, it needs to NOT reach that level of acceptance, because it is not something large numbers of women would wish to do to make money.

As a reference, an animal loving friend of mine nearly lost her benefits years ago when she refused to work in a vivisection lab, so common sense doesn't always prevail.

LEGALIZE! Safer for everyone! Prostitution is going to happen whether its legal or not, legalize and at least the government can tax the proceeds and make testing for STDs mandetory. The brothels in Nevada seem to be a good business plan roll model.

Agree! keep it out in the open and keep it clean with mandetory testing. It will go on regardless, whether it's legal or not, as it has for centuries. Let the government benefit from the taxes paid too.
