Thank you for the insight! I went after the ink spots with soap and warm water and it's doing the job just fine. As for the exterior of the purse, what do you think those dark spots are?
It's hard to tell. It could be the natural leather color showing through or it could be staining. Since it is on the back side, I bet it is just worn out, and cleaning probably won't help.

Is this what mold on a bag looks like?

http://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/221933230682

I haven't encountered it yet, and don't want to bid on something beyond my skill level. Also, how would you guys go about fixing the loss of leather on the binding? Just curious...these are things I would like to eventually be able to do.
I think that is mold damage. It might not be live mold but it has been damaged. I wouldn't go near that bag for that price. I think the leather is probably past the point of recoverability. The way that hole looks, I think the leather dried out and cracked. It looks brittle.

If the rest of the bag was in good condition, I would get a bag that had a hole in the piping. There are several ways to fix this. The most correct way is to replace part of the piping with a new piece of leather. That is too difficult for me. I've fixed holes in piping by filling in the hole and then painting over it. I've used leather cement, acrylic paint and fabric puff paint, all with pretty good results. I have one now that I'm planning on putting leather inside the hole and gluing it in place.

I'm having problems with a sticky strap - advice appreciated :

I bought this Sonoma 4928 Messenger bag on Ebay.
The bag is in nice shape. When I first got it I saw that the strap is slightly cracked
on the edges where it gets the most wear and seemed a little dry, but I was OK with that.

I thought a good washing and conditioning would help, but I think I made it worse - see pics!

FYI, I hand-washed the entire bag in warm water with Dawn, conditioned with Leather Therapy. The strap seemed sticky after that, so I soaked the strap only one more time, scrubbed lightly with a natural bristle nail brush, gave it 2 coats of leather Therapy. Then did the whole bag with Blackrock.

Ugh - now the strap looks dull, feels a bit tacky and now has a couple of lumpy areas.
Advice appreciated!
TIA!

I would venture to guess that there is some kind of glue between the layers of the strap that dissolved in the bath.

As for what to do about it, I really don't know. Some kind of sticky substance remover like acetone or Goo Gone might help...or it might make things still worse.

So sorry this happened!

The bag might be worse than it looks.

The seller already sold the bag, took a return and got a negative feedback when she sold the bag on Oct. 20.

Sketchy! It looks like it may have sold again. I feel bad for whoever bought it!

If you look at the original pictures, you can't see the hole but you can see a place where a hole might be starting. The leather is in such horrible shape that I wonder if the hole got much worse during shipping. I think the leather is rotten and it wouldn't take much for it to fall apart. I remember now that Two.time.bags bought a bag that disintegrated in the bath.

Just gave this Flat Pack a bath since it was pretty dirty. Now it has these stains! On both sides! I didn't see any black runoff in the water. Ideas? If they don't go a away, what are my best bets for dying it?

:crybaby:
