As early as you feel like just in case what happened to Swanky might happen to you. Other than that, 2 weeks notice I would say. Very tricky question. I never thought about that!

Did they have any idea that you could be moving across the country?

I'd suggest giving three weeks notice and also offer to train your replacement. If you have a REALLY good relationship with this employer and think they wouldn't want you to leave immediately, you might want to consider giving up to 4 weeks notice. Some employers want people to leave immediately since they figure you'll either NOT work during your notice period or that you'll just steal company info.

I totally agree with Wicked on this one. Since you have a good working relationship and like the company, I would give them 4 weeks and also offer to train the replacement. That will leave everyone in good spirits and should you ever come back, they will more likely be wanting to hire you instead of bad spiteful feelings. Not to mention, future references for job referrals.

Give them a minimum of two weeks; three if you're feeling gracious. But before you turn in your letter of resignation, pack up your personal items from your workspace, clear your computer(s) of any personal data, and generally just be prepared to be escorted out of the buildig the minute news of your resigning hits HR. Some companies do have policies like this in place, and sometimes bosses just want you out sooner rather than later.

Good luck with the move!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your input. After a much consideration and after reading all your ladies comment, I think I am going for 4 weeks. It will give them at least 2 weeks to look for someone and 2 weeks to hopefully train the person.

But, I am also preparing for the worst as well. If they decided to let me go earlier, then we just have to start the move a little earlier than expected. At least I know I did my part ( at the best intention) by giving them 4 wks.

I really appreciate everyone's comment, thanks !!

I usually give 4 wks notice for employers I really like and they really appreciate it since they'll need you to stick around and help them train your "replacement." You will also leave the company on a good note just in case you ever want to go back to them in the future.
