YSL versus Chanel: not same price, same quality?

hi everyone,
I’ve been trying to buy a very nice bag to my girlfriend since years.
First we was focus on Chanel bags and more precisely the Timeless.
Then we discover the YSL : Loulou and Enveloppe.
And there is a very huge difference in terms of prices between YSL bags and Chanel bags.
Is there any thing which explains this difference. Quality? Level of finitions?
Would you advice me to pay 3 times more for that Chanel instead of the YSL?
Anyway, which YSL model is the best seller? Loulou or Enveloppe?

I think where I’m from, Loulou is much more popular than the Envelope. Personally, I’d not go for either bag cuz I prefer the structure of the Envelope but I can’t stand the chevron (in different directions?!) mixed with quilting - it’s also why I don’t like some Gucci Marmonts as well. But for the Loulou, it’s too shapeless for my liking and I do prefer more structured bags.

It depends on what she’s planning to use it for, how often she’s going to use it, what kind of look she usually goes for, etc

I know that the price difference can be explained by the perceived value of the brand, which Chanel has been more successful at marketing. As for quality, I have read on both the YSL forum and the Chanel forum similar problems with leather peeling (Caviar and pebbled), hardware chipping, etc. Sounds common for a lot of brands actually. What I have noticed in my own experience is that YSL leather is not as nice as the leather from other brands like Fendi, Dior, and LV, but I do not have any Chanel products to compare.

I have used a lot of brands (LV, BV, Bal, Goyard, Gucci, Prada, etc.) and last year, I took the plunge into Chanel, spent an arm and a leg, and bought 3 bags. They were all beautiful (albeit a little stuffy and I am a mid-40 something woman saying that), but soooooo fragile and I don't think it was worth the price. I sold 2 of them and will probably sell the third soon. For the price, I have been most impressed with my YSL and Gucci bags. I have the YSL Nikki bag and a YSL clutch (in the Lou pattern) and am salivating over the YSL Envelope. I had the Chanel Boy in caviar, but the leather was peeling on the corners only after a few uses and I was so gentle with it. My Chanel lambskin tote wore out at the corners after a few months and the re-sell value was not what I hoped because of that. I have not babied the Nikki and it has held up great. Hope this helps!

The YSL Envelope bag is beautiful, stylish and extremely classic. The price is a lot more reasonable than Chanel. :)

I can compare the caviar leather from both. And I have to say there is a huge difference between the Chanels caviar and YSL pebbled leather. Chanel is a lot better. I have few classics flaps, WOCs and YSL envelope woc. Chanel woc is much better, holds more than small YSL woc and the leather is nicer. I use my Chanel WOCs more than my YSL WOC but the Chanel ones look better considering to wear and tear. I don't know how to explain but YSL pebbled leather gets dirty more and faster than Chanel caviar. Hope it helps.

I don’t have any of them but I’ve seen sone videos praising the College bag from YSL so why don’t you check that one.

Shea Whitney said the college bag is one of her most used bags and she has tons of luxury bags and actually said her Chanel is one of the bags she wears the least even though she loves it.
