I just realized that the envelope bag I received yesterday from SaksOff has smooth leather and not poudre (pebbled) leather like my uptown Pouch purchased directly from Saint Laurent. I’ve only seen photos of the bag as poudre. People talk about throwing the envelope bag around and I can’t see me doing with smooth leather. To be clear, the smooth is not shiny.

Is the smooth leather version of the medium handbag legit?

According to the website, it does appear to be legit. It is called supple matelasse leather.

I believe the one you referred to is this one:

They both appear to be in stock.

I bought the medium grain de poudre embossed leather in 2017 and it is an extremely sturdy bag. It only just started showing a bit of wear and tear in 2021 and that is hardly noticeable. (but I will say wow the price has definitely gone up! :shocked:Mine including tax was about $2200 USD.)
However, in terms of durability and scratch resistance, I would not say the same for any smooth leather from any brand.
If this is going to be a casual bag for you, it may be better to exchange for the grain de poudre version.

Good luck!

THANK YOU! I knew someone here could help  I appreciate sharing your experience too.

This helps explain a $100 difference I saw on two listings on SaksOff5th. I wonder if the other one was poudre. I would have preferred the poudre but the price savings is $1k (based on this other model) and it’s absolute new condition. SaksOff5th does not have any other in stock.

I did some additional research and it appears similar to how the Lou camera bag and LouLou are structured…which are prone to creasing. This is what I saw at Saint Laurent when I looked at the camera bag.

Currently, this is my mostly priced handbag…as I bought some LV a couple of years ago at lower price points. I was planning to use it for dressing up casual wear and evening. I’m not wearing this to the grocery store or “throwing it around”.

I think I’m keeping it and I’m okay babying it :)

I had ordered one from Lord & Taylor because I got it at a similar discounted price. When it arrived, I realized it was smooth leather. The department stores must have more of the smooth leather in stock. I ended up returning mine because I wanted the grained leather, but it is gorgeous if you’re willing to baby the bag! Plus it now retails for more than the grained leather.

I had not either! I did end up finding an example in Saks in a lighter color at the higher $3,050 price.

Im going to keep it for now since IT
1. does exists
2. Costs more than the poudre version
3. Is new/rare
4. Has authenticity cards
5. Looks like made in my birthday month
6. Is friggin new

Has anyone taken their handbag to be scanned at Saint Laurent?

I can’t help to be a bougie broad :amuse:

This is very helpful and comforting to know. I appreciate the bag uses different material presentation than the poudre on my uptown pouch.

Yes, it is sometimes a bit confusing that YSL offers the same handbag styles with different leather options. I have seen this smooth leather version too and wondered if this is a new release. I think it looks very beautiful but surely is a bit more delicate than the grain leather version.

I dunno either if it’s a new style. I’m not on other social media and YSL email marketing hasn’t really showcased the Envelope. The provided web link above is the first I see a ‘supple’ version (calfskin). I now see the shopping tote is also of supple leather, which may help understand its future wear. https://www.ysl.com/en-us/shopping-...VailMCh2nLwZCEAQYASABEgI9dfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

An advantage of the Envelope is it’s structured style, which it should wear fine without me being crazy. This is one of the reasons I love my LV Alma in epi. If I need to not care, I do own a black/gold Tory Burch bag that can serve as a solid substitute.

I really wanted a chain shoulder bag. I am happy with the purchase price given the received item.

Update: I can’t get over a lingering plastic smell of the bag. My 11 year old helped scour the Internet and compared YSL real vs fake examples, and she concluded it was real…but couldn’t ignore the smell. My Alma epi is 2 years old and it still has a nice leather smell. She reasons that it was wrapped in plastic…but it’s been 5 days since unboxing.

I called Saint Laurent (I’m crazy but you gals get it). It turns out the smooth envelope was a short run done last year. The style was discontinued to make way for the Gabby (sp?). The store has one in stock and it’s on hold for me. I plan to visit the store tomorrow to determine whether I keep mine…

I realize this is an old thread but I was wondering what you ended up doing? I just bought an envelope bag off FP and it was listed as grained leather and it showed up and it’s smooth leather. I’ve never seen a smooth leather bag and the tag is still attached with a $2950 price on it. The only smooth leather one for that price on the YSL website has the tri color logo. I’m so confused. It’s the Blanc vintage color and beautiful but I’m wondering if it’s real. How did your story end with your bag? Does anyone else think this looks strange?

First off, congrats! I absolutely love your color combination!

My story…
I purchased a black medium envelope via Off5thSaks at an increasingly discount (like close to $1k off) thinking it was poudre but it was smooth. The bag arrived in brand new condition with all packaging but smelled plasticky. After intense online investigation looking at counterfeits, a visit to Saint Laurent store confirmed the smooth option was a one year production that discontinued due to introduction of a similar bag. The store had one and I very closely inspected (and smelled) it to successfully confirm the authenticity of Off5thSaks purchase.

Fast forward, I love the look but treat it carefully. It’s my only double chain bag but it’s limited in space. It’s pretty much my brunch bag.
