Hi all - my monogram cabas has a strap which is starting to completely fray... The glue has come off. The boutique is saying they can take it to a local repairman for $130 CAD or order me a new one for $180. The initial quote in the store was $30.

Is this consistent with anyone else's experience? Or have you found cheaper alternatives (local repair places?) Or even had it done for free in a boutique?

Thanks!

At my location (California, USA), the policy is that if the bag is still being sold on the market and is within 2 years of its purchase date, all repairs are covered.

After that there is a fee for repairs or replacement. Those prices sound about right to me. (But that initial quote feels a little low.)

Thanks for the info! I bought it in 2018, and so it's past the 2 year mark.

I'm wondering if I should bring it into a regular local shoe or bag cobbler and if that might be better....$130 to re-edge the glue feels really steep... But then I suppose YSL may not repair it in the future

That is correct. Once it is touched by a 3rd party YSL will not take it in for any kind of repair or service again.

To be fair a proper edge coat repair involves a significant amount of labour and time so I’m not at all surprised by the quote. The old edge coat needs to be carefully sanded away. They then need to add multiple layers of edge coat with a light sanding between each coat. (Proper way to achieve an even surfaced edge coat).

It doesn’t hurt to ask a competent leatherworker for a quote but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are around the same ballpark.
