I recently bought the WP Standard (whipping post) Midland backpack. It’s pretty much a backpack purse because it’s big enough to carry a lot but small enough to be a purse.

Initial Review (Fresh Out of the Box):

I ordered this Brown Midland Backpack on Saturday 9 Nov 2019, it shipped Monday 11 Nov 2019 from Fort Worth, TX to me in 29 Palms, CA and arrived Thursday 14 Nov 2019.

I’ve been looking for a backpack version of a crossbody bucket bag. I wanted a drawstring AND a flap closure for the backpack though. I like that style because I can just throw everything in the bag and organize my things on my own. I’m VERY particular about the shape and size of my bags as well. I don’t accept anything but full grain leather because I want my bags to last for a long time and even surpass me. It can’t be too small so I can use it for class, but it can’t be too big cause I tend to overpack and it gets too much to carry around. I wanted something big enough for adventures and to fit my laptop amongst other things, but small enough to be a backpack purse as well. So I pretty much want a bag to carry to any event/ place. This Midland Backpack pretty much ticked off all of the boxes. It’s 13" L x 6" W x 14" H (or 14” tall, 13” wide, and 6” deep in depth) and only 3lbs empty! The only thing that might have people change their mind is this:

I was told by WP Standard themselves that the Tan and Black leathers are vegetable tanned but the Brown leathers are chrome tanned. When I asked this, WP tried to get me a vegetable tanned brown Midland backpack but it wasn’t possible. I bought the chrome tanned brown bag anyway because of the many positive reviews of other people with WP’s other products. I was really grateful and impressed with the customer service. I just prefer vegetable tanned because a lot of people say it lasts longer, but I honestly think it really just comes down to how you take care of your leathers... and I’m really good at taking care of my things.

As for fitting things inside, even with my:
  • 2018 MacBook Air 13.3”
  • a folder filled with papers
  • a pouch filled with chargers (Mac, iPhone, portable charger, cac reader)
  • another pouch for feminine stuff and my headphones
  • a hair brush
  • my retainers
  • a pencil case
  • an A5 Leuchtturm1917 notebook inside a custom StrideRide leather cover
  • 3 medium Moleskine notebooks for my classes
  • my glasses
  • an umbrella
  • my wallet
  • my keys
  • and my hard drive
the bag was LIGHT. It felt VERY comfortable on my shoulders and the bottom of the bag didn’t dig into my lower back. Even the straps were comfortable. 10/10 I’m REALLY ecstatic about my purchase. Their email about its debut actually came in perfect timing too, I was about to quit on trying to find the perfect leather backpack.. then it showed up in my Inbox!

I will update my review after I’m actually able to really have some time to use the backpack so you guys are well informed. I have no concern about the bag falling apart though.... maybe just the little leather part that cinches the drawstring closed but even that looks sturdy. Either way, it has a Life Time Warranty Guaranteed!

The first two photos of the bag with a tag and it being on the couch is before Mink Oil. The photos after without the tag is after Mink Oil. It softened up immediately even after already being soft. It still holds its shape though.

WP Standard website Specs of the Midland backpack:
  • Length: 13"
  • Width: 6"
  • Height: 14"
  • Weight: 3lbs.
  • Adjustable leather straps
  • Internal drop pocket
  • Grab handle
  • 100% full-grain leather
  • Brass Hardware
  • Leather Straps
  • Copper Rivets
