I live in Calgary Canada and the weather could be really extreme, it can go up to -30C or even -40C max for couple days during winter time. Asking you guys opinion whether you still wear them all year long? Will the extreme weather damage the bag overtime? Thanks all!

I posted in Chanel forum so I thought I should post here as well. I live in Calgary where the weather could be really extreme during winter time, probably up to around -30C when it's harsh and even go down to -40C max. Are you still wearing your luxury handbag all year round and also during this winter time or you keep them home? I wonder if wearing the bag during harsh weather will damage bag's leather over time.

I had some concerns about what I wore when I went to northern Norway in March of 2019. I decided against exposing my Hermes bags to the near-zero temperatures at night, although I did see other women with Birkins and Kellys when we went to dinner. I opted to use my favorite Goyard because there's not much I haven't already put it through at this point. I also brought a Prada nylon messenger bag with me on that trip, which would have been great for my purposes in that cold. All of that said, I've never actually been in -30º to -40ºC weather, so I can't speak from experience.

I suppose if the only exposure to those temperatures is between the car and your indoor destination, there shouldn't be any real harm done. If you're spending any considerable amount of time outside though, I'd skip the nice bag.

Generally speaking though, if it's extremely cold outside, my bags and I are just not going out.

Hi,
I am in Toronto and though our weather SLIGHTLY milder than yours, I tend to switch from my Chanel bags when it hits -10 (about -15/-17 with windchill). Having said that, I also tend not to use my Chanel bags during a warmer season if it rains. I know it’s probably silly of me and I really don’t mind wear on my bags, but I am weary of a potential damage. Other than that, I use my Chanel bags on a daily basis (be it work, school pick up/drop off, shopping, etc).

I live in michigan and it gets that cold every winter. This year has not been that bad (knock on wood). I am usually not out when it's that cold to even consider wearing chanel haha. I only go out when it's that cold to go to work but I dont wear chanel to work. I usually wear my Canada goose parka and RUN from the car to my clinic.

I'm sure it'll be ok to wear chanel though. Maybe caviar moreso than lambskin?

I wear my luxury bags in winter, as long as it's not snowing. But we don't get those extremely low temperatures that you mention.

Well, living in Minnesota, if we didn't carry our luxury bags for the four months out of the year it might get really cold, we'd never carry them. I look at it this way: My car will be warm within minutes, I'm going straight to wherever (store, work) where it's warm. So yes, I don't keep my luxury bags in those horrid temps, mostly because I don't keep "me" in those horrid temps. :flowers:

Where I live we also have about 4 months of extreme cold temperatures. I keep a few luxury bags aside just for these winter months, and they’ve all held up very well. One is a Proenza Schouler PS1 for everyday, and another one is a Ferragamo top handle crossbody (in textured leather) if I wanted to carry less or if I wanted to be more dressier. I purchased both on big discounts and therefore it doesn’t make me feel too terrible if they get a bit beat up. I’ve had both for about 4 years already and wore them for 4 winters straight.

For wet weather (storm, hail, freezing rain, blizzard, you name it), I wear longchamp nylon bags. I wouldn’t wear my more fragile luxury pieces during winter, but still want to enjoy my stuff as much as can be, otherwise winter’s gonna feel too long

I am from Edmonton, Alberta! I still wear my Chanel all through the winter months. I don't think the cold weather will damage the leather. I am more worry about me bumping my bags into people or dirty cars. I will wear caviar during the winter. Enjoy your Chanel bags all year around!

Thats a great question, do you think freezing weather can make the bag brittle?
I find it hard to wear a bag over a bulky coat (narrow sloped shoulders plus bulky sleeves means the purse keeps slipping down)
So definitely use them less

Yes, They don’t get exposed to much weather in the winter and they are always warm enough. If it might snow I just tuck my bag under my coat or use a woc that can fit under a coat easily.
