I just saw some people on reddit saying amazon sells a lot of fakes in DS cosmetics. seems to me counterfeit stuff would be more likely on luxury items - not drugstore cosmetics. I've bought DS skin care, hair color and cosmetics there with no issues. I wouldn't want to learn the hard way that I got a counterfeit item that hurt my skin or hair.
any thoughts?

I wouldn't bother with easy to find drugstore items but maybe if had a discontinued fave. I do know lots of black market beauty (salon products included) items are sold; they're not always real, additionally, sometimes it's old stock, that's expired, stolen, returned, etc...

I have purchased cosmetics from Amazon that are usually available from the company
but also sell on that platform. That's what I look for
I also look at reviews that other buyers have left.
Don't know that Reddit is the barometer for that, JMO

I'd consider these as well, products sold by the actual company/manufacturer instead of a 3rd party Amazon seller.

often amazon prices are the lowest and they have such an easy return policy
The one thing I got from them that I had doubts about because the price was very low was MAC eyeshadow. but the packaging looked right. Still not sure they are authentic but they didn't hurt me.

I frequently buy skincare like body lotion/sunscreen/other personal hygiene products from Amazon out of convenience, but most of the time I make sure to buy direct from Amazon, not a third party vendor. I know someone who bought Supergoop from a third party vendor and then was notified by Amazon a few months later that the product they purchased was counterfeit. There was also a story in the news a few months ago about a woman who was arrested in California because she had an extensive theft ring (she sent people into shops like Sephora and Ulta to shoplift) and she sold like over $8 million worth of goods in her Amazon store over the last 10 years! @sdkitty if the products are sold by Amazon directly, most likely it's ok. (Hopefully!) Sometimes I also buy from Target.com and have noticed their prices can actually be cheaper depending on the item. (also have to make sure it's coming directly from Target.) I just don't have time (or patience) to physically go to the stores so online shopping is easiest for me.

same here....I don't want to go to WM or target searching for what I want and waiting to pay. I recently got some root touch up product that looked different in terms of packaging. I went and looked online and target has the product in that packaging so I guess it's ok. maybe they've changed their packaging.
