Hi everyone! I just hope to share a recent Chanel shopping experience that just seemed so bizarre. I was in SCP a few days ago, and decided to buy a beige reissue. Once I opened the box and checked thoroughly at home, it was a 23 series from 17P collection. Considering that it was January 2021 that I bought it, it had been sitting in stock for 4 years already! I did know that Chanel boutiques could keep their stock for up to 2 years, but little did I know I could find something from early 2017.

The dealbreaker was not just the date/collection of the bag. It was the quality. Not only did it have popped stitches near the grommets. The corner of the inner flap was also creased. There were only one sticker attached. The others were all missing. I wouldn't be surprised if it was sold to me right after someone else returned it! I later learnt it was supposed to be sheepskin, not calf as the SA suggested!

The more peculiar thing happened when I tried to exchange it. Even though the process was overall smooth, it was frustrating that my SA kept saying that Chanel sent them new shipments of older seasonal styles (which was not factual at all to my knowledge) and that I should feel lucky to find a unique style (Really??). I later told her the real problem was the quality of this particular one, not so much the date of production. With this price, I should be satisfied with my merchandise. The worst part was that I had to show her what 23 series meant in terms of date and the fact that it was sheepskin... I thought they should have received some form of training of basic knowledge on the products. But again, she didn't seem to care other than making the effort to justify selling older models.

Even more to my story, there are a lot more older models of reissue and Classic Flaps at SCP: I saw a couple from 2018 and many from 2019. I ended exchanging for an reissue that was made in 2020. It's not even about the price increase, more about the quality control and flipping older products for almost $1000 or $2000 more. If you were to charge so much more for the same thing, at least make sure they are of decent quality.

Just curious how you would react to a situation like this. Would you feel lucky to find a 4-year-old seasonal style if the quality issue weren't present? Or would you rather choose something else or look preloved instead?

I personally wouldn't mind - I definitely think it's fun to find these treasures (assuming no quality issues). I recently saw the 18B taupe w/ RHW small classic flap in a boutique and couldn't believe it as I thought it would have surely sold out by now. However, as you note, it is annoying to pay so much more than what the bag originally retailed at given the price increases.

I also think it's odd that your SA said Chanel sent the boutique shipments of older styles - that doesn't make much sense to me, but then again who knows.

Thanks for sharing your opinion! Yes I totally agree. It really depends on the specific item. A taupe CF would easily have my heart stolen  If it's in immaculate condition and a style I'd regret missing out, then I would totally go for it!

I just found the SA's explanation a bit unconvincing and confusing. Would Chanel repeatedly produce the same seasonal color and label it as an older series? But exactly, who knows. :confused1:

Is it possible they transferred some old inventory that was taking up space in a smaller/low volume store to south coast plaza, which I imagine is the opposite of that? Still strange but one possible explanation.

That's exactly what happens. In the retail world, the buyers will consolidate and reallocate stock depending on current sell through trends of certain stores. Let's say one store has a trend of selling neutrals colors, while another doesn't. It would make the most sense to move more of the remaining neutrals to the store that sells the most, no?

Thank you! That explains it for me.

Do you know if it sold when you were at the boutique? My dream color :/

I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t have those quality issues. Sometimes bags can get lost in the stockroom. Maybe they don’t do much inventory. I know at my local boutique they have inventory days.... at Neiman’s one SA told me sometimes some items get buried by new stock and so they just sit three until someone wants to buy them....

I agree I love find older season stock as long as it was not a return! (Although that would be hard to know unless it was really damaged or faulty!)

I think its so exciting seeing older styles and finding gems if you are lucky but most SAs dont bother show you anything old season as its just current seasons they usually concentrate on.
