I know it's going to happen, but now I'm not going to get a luggage piece unless I know I have it with me at all times.

Sorry to hear about this! Think of it like a car. The first scratch is always the hardest to accept. I also checked out your picture and can't even see where the scratch is. I figured it would be much worse given how the airlines handle luggage.

ouch! I'm so sorry this happened to you...that's also one of my worst fears...so far I don't own any luggages yet...but your posting is making me want to think twice now..
