These bags are very popular in Florence, and I've seen them when travelling in other parts of Italy. There's a store selling them just near the Duomo - I haven't noticed any knock-offs of them in the centre though - perhaps you're seeing knock-offs overseas?

I've seen them in Florence too, and the real ones are nicely made. There are fakes or imitations of them in the US that I've seen.

I've seen a bunch of map bags here in Italy. I think they are probably knock offs, from the way the look and have worn.

I've seen knock-offs on Ebay.

Bloomies used to carry it years ago but no longer. I believe there are a few websites on-line with authentic ones (like maybe 1 or 2). They are really beautiful bags. I had one stolen in Florida once and never replaced it.

Forzieri has a nice selection. Reasonably priced and every bit as nice as LV or any other vinyl covered canvas bag. I love them. They stir the imagination, if you ask me.
