I recently landed a fancy new job in the finance sector (which is new to me) and I’m struggling to figure out what to wear for the first day. I’ve worked primarily in the non-profit sector, prior to this role, so I’m stressing a little bit. I want to come across as polished and put together, keeping in mind the fact that regionally, people tend to dress fairly casually where I live.

I would appreciate any feedback on these two outfits!

When you went in for your interview, how was everyone else dressed?

Or were you unable to go in person and it was virtual?
I didn’t spy how others were dressed, but the two men I interviewed with were both dressed in nice slacks and shirts. I think the head guy was actually in a suit but the person I’d be working with wasn’t.

Second outfit of the two posted. 100% agree with @snibor

Agree with @snibor and @880 .

First one is a cute dress but it's more like a summer going out dress.
Second one is more toned down but it is a little casual, imo. (I do agree with having a cardigan handy though, it can get cold!)

I usually wear scrubs (yay, lazy me) but when I have to "dress up" I prefer to go business casual.
It doesn't have to be a crisp suit with a button-up blouse.

Just my thoughts:
Slacks of your choice (wide leg, carrot leg, culotte, etc.) with close-toed shoes (loafers, flats, or pumps)
Top can be a slightly fitted knit. Or a a nice blouse with a design of your choice.
Or you can go preppy with a blouse underneath a knit vest.
Outerwear can be a blazer.

I'm not saying a dress or skirt is a no. I just think pants are just safer in general when walking around or sitting down. I personally don't want to be concerned about a wardrobe malfunction while I'm working. Don't need a distraction or an accident lol.

I'm with @papertiger on dressing like you did for the interview, or even up from there. No one will fault you if you are too formal for the office on your first day - that's really normal (everyone on my team started in suits their first day, got one look at the senior partners, and are now in jeans LOL). Finance is a really varied field these days, even within, say, investment banks, and it takes a minute to "get" each office's vibe.

If you go with that in mind and (important) are comfortable in what you're wearing, you won't have to think about your clothes at all, and you can always observe and adjust to be more casual.

Congrats!
