Have you seen the show? What was your first impression of the cartoon animals? Here they are hanging around

Thanks for the post. I watched the show, I had a feeling when those balloons floated through Shanghai that we would see those motifs in the collection. I believe I saw a bag with a dog on it, I’m always a sucker for dogs. But some of the clothes with those? I’m not the market for that. We shall see.

Just watched the show. Beyond wanting to scream for more and better camera angles, I really enjoyed it. I loved the slouchy Capucines, Dauphine, and the more clutch-sized Side Trunk. I also liked the juxtaposition of the cartoon animals on the amazing drape and movement of the skirts (apologies for the terrible screen grab):

I thought the clutch side trunk was interesting as well, apparently half of the screenshots I took are of this bag. I think the slouching effect would be limited and hidden if worn on the shoulder though. I know it’s not that popular, but I like the pico size of the side trunk!

I was hoping this show and collection would be a little more dystopian after seeing the promo video of the balloons floating menacingly through the city skyscrapers. I even had dreams about it; creepy vs lighthearted delight, sinister undertones, like a statement about the last few years…all designer hype/overproduced media images/comodifying everything vs pandemic/death/economic collapse/political unrest set to a restless, relentless beat. It was a little less of a statement! Or maybe I missed the statement.

The artist’s description was helpful, but I think it was more interesting than impactful (and that’s ok).

I love the clothes, too! They're so funky and flattering on a wide range of shapes and could even be worn at different age groups. Found the last few Women's runways so depressing and dull in comparison. (No offence to anyone who loved those, we all have diff tastes :) )

You're right, the flow and drape comes out so nicely! It's a very mix and match collection that could be paired with neutrals in a wardrobe.

Waiting for my DH before I watch the rerun since he enjoys these fashion shows as well. Even the box for these perfumes are so cute!

Seeing the tiger and rabbit always reminds me of the zodiac. Interesting that this was timed in a year that doesn't have either of those, but maybe they only discovered Sun Yitian after other LNY collections were planned.

Maybe we need a Year of the Penguin to happen :D

What are your thoughts? :) I remember you haven't been a fan of a lot of recent Men's collections, I felt this collection despite the bright colours and large motifs was less "loud" than Pharrell's Damier for example, which sounds weird to say but somehow there's a good harmony with the clothes that were in Shanghai?

Well, I also felt that this was far nicer. Nicolas' has a distinctive style. People may like it or not, but when you see a design from him from 15 years ago, you just know it's him. And you'll recognise the ones 10 years from now too.
On the men's side I feel nothing like that, just a cacophony of whatever the the current moment dictates. So hype culture :D And I see that it currently (which is a keyword here) sells, but that doesn't mean that it is compatible with luxury. Rather it is just a vulgar caricature of it. And the end result is a hit or miss. The cowboy themed clothes from Pharrel felt quite refreshing and smart, while the Tyler stuff was just awful. Anyway, I don't wanna ruin the mood haha :D
I was not familiar with the work of Sun (like 99% of the Vuitton clientele), my first impression was just "what are these cheaply drawn South Park animals doing on a Métis?" :D but after doing my homework, I feel that they didn't do a good job translating her art to leather. The twist in her art — as I understood — is that she takes the cheap mass-produced plastic animals, and paints them hyper realistically with a LOT of work. And Vuitton just quickly prints them onto some stiff leather and stitches them on. That is very lazy, and I don't feel that it is honest to the original art. It would have been much nicer to recreate the balloon animals in the finest, smoothest leather. I see that it would have required a LOT of work (like her paintings), but Vuitton chose the mass-produced cheap way. Imagine a Pochette Métis with a real leather balloon hanging on the front, yummy :)

I LOL'd at South Park  maybe that's for next year  but yes I agree , you can recognise Nicolas' silhouettes here- but it was disappointing about the flat texture of the animals on the mono. When I first saw Yitian's paintings with the photorealism , I was pleasantly surprised because they fit my taste so much more than the way the animals are on the bags. Her paintings reminded me of Jeff Koons' balloons! She is incredibly talented to be able to paint like that and convey deeper messages beyond just pretty paintings.

Anyway, my ramble over

I did notice the bunny charm looks to be all leather!

Yes, the have very similar vibes, both literally and artistically. Wish they have put as much effort into it production wise as with the Koons collaboration. For that they invented new techniques, used new materials, etc... I feel her art would have deserved the same extra mile.
