Woman Ticketed For Sitting On Park Bench With No Kids

Ticket Could Bring $1,000 Fine, 90 Days In Jail

POSTED: 9:06 am EDT September 28, 2005

NEW YORK -- It's an only in New York story. A woman was given a ticket for sitting on a park bench because she doesn't have children.

The Rivington Playground on Manhattan's East Side has a small sign at the entrance that says adults are prohibited unless they are accompanied by a child. Sandra Catena, 47, said she didn't see the sign when she sat down to wait for an arts festival to start.

Two New York City police officers asked her if she was with a child. When she said no, they gave her a ticket that could bring a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail.

The city parks department said the rule is designed to keep pedophiles out of city parks, but a parks spokesman told the Daily News that the department hoped police would use some common sense when enforcing the rule.

The spokesman told the paper that ticketing a woman in the park in the middle of the day is not the way you want to enforce the rule.

While I understand the rationale behind this law, childless people pay taxes too. They have every right to use that park. If the police have time to ticket people under this ridiculous rule, why aren't they catching the pedophiles that require this rule?

Living in NYC< I can tell you police don't use common sense. They just have ticket quotas to reach. For those of you who don't know, a typical parking ticket in NYC is $115. Parking. Not speeding, not running a red light, but parking.

There is also this monthly bicycling event here called Critical Mass, where anyone with a bike can join this ride that happens on the last friday of every month, around the city just for the hell of it. Just a bike ride, no agenda of any sort.

Sounds like harmless fun, right?

Well, ever since the ********** National Convention last year, the police have made it a point to follow and ARREST anyone they can 'catch' on the grounds that any gathering above 7 people needs a permit.

No one yet can explain why bicyclists are specifically being targeted. I mean come on, bicyclists? An anarchistic vigilante group overdue for discipline, you know?
