Hi,

I'm kinda in a dilemma here. I'm planning to engrave a watch that i am goin to buy. Its a TAG Heuer with diamond bezel. Will it affect the value of the watch if I am goin to sell it someday ?

Thankz.

Yes, the resale value of a watch is significantly reduced sometimes due to engraving. After all, who wants to purchase a watch with someone else's name or significant date on it? But the question is whether you are buying this as something you will love and want to keep or whether you are buying this with an eye to reselling at some point. If you definitely plan to sell it someday, don't engrave it.

ITA, if you think you may ever sell it, do not engrave it. I know most people would never want to buy a watch that was engraved with someone's name or a special date or something. Just my 2 cents....

Personally, I wouldn't buy the watch at all if you are already planning to resell it someday. You will take a huge hit, it is not a good investment. Only buy it if it's for keeps. Engraved or not, you will only get a fraction of your money if you sell it, it's like selling a used car. Just buy a cheaper watch so you aren't out so much money if you change your mind a lot.

agree with above posts, buy cause you love it and want to keep and go ahead and engrave but don't plan to sell because the value will be way lower once engraved (unless perhaps you are famous in which case it might go up!!! LOL)

Hi,

Thankz Haute Mama, kristie, dreaming beauty, juilletdix, shopetoh and LV-pradafanatic for all your inputs. I really like the watch. Have been lusting it for a while. I'm planning to keep it but I am just afraid it will just devalue the watch in any other way.

As my friend is currently a staff at my local tag Heuer boutique, I could get great staff discount with the currently controlled price. So, im kinda taking this opportunity. However, its their policy that the watch will be engraved with the staff's name to prevent its staff selling outside. The lucky thing is that my friend's name is the same as mine.

Should i just get the watch despite the engraving? I would be saving like a lot though.

If you love the watch and that's the only way to get it at that price, then I'd say go for it. But don't expect to be able to sell or trade it for anywhere close to it's value.

Put it this way, if you were in the market for a used watch, would you want to buy one with someone else's name engraved on it?

Your TAG will be worth almost nothing in a few years anyway (I know, all mine are). Don't mean to sound blunt, but on that type of watch, no need to worry about devaluation. TAGs are very common nowadays.
