Why do we women like jewelry sooooo very much?

My question or observation came up while a friend of mine and I were shopping. I said, I just love, love bling. She said "all girls do." This made me think when did we women begin to wear much much more jewelry than men? Did we learn this or is it innate? I just cannot get enough bling and absolutely adore it. My boyfriend wears one ring on a good day when he is not working. Maybe I shouldn't ask why but enjoy it. What do you think?

I dunno, good question. Even as a little girl I had my own collection of semi-precious polished and rough gemstones, so for me I’ve loved bling for as long as I can remember. My mother doesn’t like it. My sister loves it, but not quite as much as me - she has been known to wear some of my pieces in the past, though! The perils of having good taste.
A doctor of mine wears a gold chain around his neck, but that’s it. Another doctor I go to wears a pinky ring. Most men here wear nothing, but if they do, it’s the same as the doctors above. I’ve never seen a man wear a wedding ring, and I’ve never seen a man with ear piercings here.
But the women? That’s a different story! The women love wearing jewellery, and this isn’t a first-world country, so they’ll wear anything to jazz themselves up! Rhinestones, plastic, brass, copper, you name it.

Not all women do. Two of my friends just about wear a single band wedding ring. We just notice when people wear jewellery because that's what jewellery is supposed to do.

Next time look on a train or at work.

Lots of men glam themselves up in different ways. It's also becoming more and more popular, even pearls. Check out social media. My colleague was wearing a silver dog tag and pearls yesterday. Most married men I know wear a wedding ring.

I watched a YouTube video on anthropology and history of human evolution. And they were describing graves of ancient people of 50000-10000 BC. Women had some kind of pretty but useless pieces even if those were bones, shells and feathers. Some men too but if they were shamans and had ritual items with them as well but women would have them without obvious ritualistic reasons. Some women even had items made from materials unusual for that region and territories, like shells or teeth of sharks, and yet they’d lived far away from a sea, and according to their bones analysis they didn’t eat fish, so they didn’t live by the sea. So it means someone brought these items to them.
Probably some guy brought a pretty shell to his lovely lady, and she decided to carry it on her body as a decoration.

I can’t fight it. It’s 50000 years old tradition for me, it’s in my DNA. 😂

I was going to say the same thing. A lot of women don't care for jewelry.

I looked upthe history of jewellery and it actually went back something like 143,000 years!

It’s in my DNA too-we are kindred spirits❤️.
When I was 6 I asked for a necklace instead of toys , and started buying fancy coloured diamonds at 16- I’ll never stop.
I want to live to 125, because I don’t ever want to have to stop buying jewellery!

These people were still cannibals and would eat each other without a problem. They couldn’t speak properly and some even didn’t know fire.
But they knew jewelry, bones and feathers to decorate themselves.

yes we love jewelry and that’s so natural of us 😆

Life can be: complicated/messy/wonderful/??/(add your personal description)

So much potential for literally anything.

Maybe Jewelry is my personal ‘reminder’ (albeit a potentially expensive one) to pause, take a deep breath and appreciate the immediate beauty (ie visible jewelry on hands/wrists/neck/ears) right here, right now
(especially for those who may be working indoors all day in a windowless environment, not accessing the natural beauty of outdoors,or being sick and bedridden etc etc)

For me, this is it. It’s carrying a bit of beauty and self-expression around with me always.

Overall I suspect there is a bit of hardwiring in our brains to want to adorn ourselves, plus hundreds of years of “marketing” that such baubles are beautiful and desirable.

I think this question also depends what culture you're from. In my country, my tribe and surrounding tribes, not only did women wear jewelry but men were equally adorned. Men also kept their hair long while women shaved their heads. Colonialism did away eroded these standards and now it's rare to see men wearing jewelry. Heck, there's even a stigma against it with the exception being when wearing traditional clothing. You will also never see men growing their hair long. For the tribes that live in seclusion and still retain their culture (like the Maasai), very common to see men adorned in jewelry
