I did a search for this, but nothing relavent came up...

I know oils and moisture from your hands darken the handles.

Just curious, but why do they get soft?

Cause they stretch, as leather (any type of leather) does tend to stretch over time and with use. The handles aren't made of steel, they are made of pliable material like leather and the fabric tubing on the inside, which eventually loses "give" over time.

I think the tubing inside the handles may be made of some kind of soft plastic. And it softens over time or it could've been punctured snapped, this will make the handles soften.
