I've recently just bought my first Cartier piece, a small yellow gold JUC ring that I wear on my left index finger. I liked the small version on me better because I felt that it looks proportionate to my wedding band (yg and platinum) without "taking away" from my engagement on the days I wear it. But now I want to stack the JUC with a Love band. For anyone who has it, is the platinum band that much more durable, etc than white gold to justify the doubled price?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Platinum itself is much more denser and sturdier than gold. My wedding band is made of platinum but my engagement ring is white gold. If I look closely, I can see wear and tear more heavily on my white gold than my platinum.

However, does it justify the price? That's up to you.
We know that luxury brands will hike up prices of their pieces far more than what the material is actually worth. So all of it is overpriced no matter what you decide to buy. It just has to suit your preferences.

When I bought my husband his Love band as his wedding band. I asked him what he preferred, gold vs platinum for his ring. He said, they looked pretty much the same to him and he didn't care that much. He chose white gold mainly because he mainly likes to wear silver jewelry and he prefers a more "worn" lived-in look with his jewelry. His style is more casual and relaxed, so it suits his aesthetic.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for the food for thought. I live a mostly casual lifestyle too and haven't found my other white gold jewelry (non designer) high maintenance. It doesn't sound like the wear and tear bothers you or is very noticeable unless you really look?

I’m not a white metal person, but if I had to choose, it would be platinum due to all its qualities.

Platinum is more rare, more pure, denser and stays whiter (less maintenance) than gold.

Platinum does not lose its weight as white gold does when it is scratched because the platinum just gets displaced but it’s not lost. Also, for diamonds, platinum will bend but not break; therefore, it holds diamonds better.

All these qualities in my opinion make platinum worth paying the higher price.

Also, Cartier white gold, specifically, when not Rhodium plated looks grey. That also has to be a look you’re okay with, unless you want to plate and re-plate your pieces regularly to keep them looking white (likely to be needed for rings).

Platinum on the other hand, is a naturally white metal. My vote will always be for platinum over white gold.

Correct, I don’t find it that noticeable and general wear does not bother me. I expect my fine jewelry to show some wear since I wear them daily.

I definitely agree with the advantages of platinum, but I guess it's harder for me to justify Cartier's markup on the platinum band vs the gold. I know I'm paying for the brand, but I just feel like it's a much more significant hike on the platinum than the gold.

Personally I love heavy rings and bracelets; they just feel more substantial and "worth it" to me. I think if you compare the two in person, the white gold may feel "cheaper" or less durable since it will weigh less than the platinum version.

Also, somehow I bent my platinum engagement ring out of shape a couple of years ago. The jeweler who fixed it told me that had my ring been gold, it would have cracked which would have been harder to repair.

I am actually thinking about a Love ring too and would 100% pick platinum.

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. I ended up "compromising." I'm used to buying non-designer from my jeweler and wasn't ready to spend that much on a platinum band. I ended up trawling The RealReal and Fashionphile and actually found a platinum one in my size on FP for about the price of a white gold band.
