Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted here, but I’d love some guidance on which preloved Picotin you would recommend. I have other Hermes accessories (shoes and belts), but this would be my first bag. I fell in love with this style and haven’t had any luck finding a new one in boutique or online.

Both of these bags are in excellent condition. The exterior leather, bottom and interior of both bags look great.

The bag on the left is from 2020, was $1k more in price (above retail), and comes with the original box, dust bag, key and ribbon. I believe it has been used less than the second bag (the leather is a bit stiffer). The stitching on the handles is also slightly thinner.

The one on the right is from 2023, but it’s a bit softer, so perhaps used a bit more. The stitching on the handles is slightly thicker than the first bag, and it has the key but did not come with the box, dust bag or ribbon.

So I guess my question is - is it worth spending $1k more for the first bag? I don’t know a lot about Hermes leather and the preferred years. I’m assuming that the second bag is softer because it has been used more, but is it possible that it’s just a difference in the leather? Is it more desirable to have softer leather? I want to use this bag for many years to come and want to make the right decision!

Thank you!

Honestly, I would not spend 1K more to buy a Picotin (which depending on where you buy it is 30 % more than the store price) that certainly could be bought in boutiques and often online at hermes.com. On the other hand, I understand that if you wish to buy it right now and in this color that is the price you have to pay. Leather is never the same as each animal is different. However, the more you use it the softer it becomes and therefore destined to become like the most used one you have in your hand now. But that is the beauty of the bag.

Unless you just love the color, I would not keep either of these bags and continue to hold out for new new one from the boutique, at retail price. For what it’s worth, my home store closed and I was unfortunately left without an SA but the times I have walked into boutiques randomly as a walk-in, I was offered a picotin 18.

Have you tried going into your store / a nearby store and asking? Picotins seem to be available on a semi-regular basis, so unless you're in a big rush to get one, then it may just be worthwhile checking stores every so often so you can get a new one.
