I have never owned a Balenciaga City. I had the small papier bag and loved it but it was sold during a closet clean out because of the times and places I’d use it, it needed to zip close so it didn’t work for me.

The city has been on my wishlist and toward the top for I mean ten years at least. I always wound up going back and forth because of me feeling like it would go in and out of style but I’m sure that’s been discussed to death. I also would either love or hate whatever current version was running like metallic edge I loved but blackout (?) I hated and that would push me one way or another. I am finally ready for the city to be my next purchase!!! I am going to buy pre loved for sure. I’m only curious about the color. Black or red.

I wear mostly black and dress rather edgy so black suits my wardrobe perfectly and in black it could be my everyday bag easily. This also has the pro of most likely being able to find one even more affordable. I wouldn’t care about it looking well loved because I think it looks better that way.

The red is basically just stunning. I have looked high and low for a red back. I have bought and then returned or sold two red bags. They just weren’t the right shade and didn’t get used enough. They were bold but not bright colors and I love the bright red Balenciaga makes. Right now summer is on my mind though and while I often wear just black, a nice pop of color suits that very well too. I have a yellow bag I often wear in the spring and summer for instance. Now the con here is that I don’t like how the bold colors look when well loved. I don’t mind looking to find one in better shape by any means but I would only use it as an everyday bag in a short duration because I wouldn’t want to wear it out.

Does anyone have any opinions? Do you think a red metallic edge city would show wear quickly? Do you think they continue to look good if they do? Do you think the black everyday city is too iconic to resist? Do you like your balenciagas to blend in or pop?

Please help 😭 I want to make this purchase while I have the courage to do so.

I have something against black Bals. Who knows what, but worn black leather, if it is not cared for looks to me like an old rag no matter how beautiful the leather is, smooshy, soft etc etc…the softer it is, the worse feeling I have about it that I can’t see all the gunk and dirt because it is black. I bought one with beautiful wrinkled front but no wrinkles in the back where it sits against the body and I felt like I was sick ??? I bought and returned and sold a few. I kept one recent purchase, a Z tag First…it is a second times purchase, because the first someone stole from my front porch:( . It is used but not much, handles are crisp and it looks neglected in a dust bag which is great ! For me the black bag needs to be “crisp”. I thoroughly clean the bag once I get it, still I can’t deal with worn black…I can gladly tolerate worn patina on brown bags and dark red.

I always go for red, and for my taste the dark red like grenat and Bordeaux, I do not mind wear at all. At all. Dark handles just look good with those colors somehow. Bright red Bals I have quite a few and they are not really showing too much wear.

Do not take this as an advice, it is just me. I just feel like that since I can’t really tell how worn the black bag really is.

I have the City in a wide range of colors including an embarrassing amount of red ones. The color I turn to most often, by far, is black. It is just easy and practical. I grab it when I don’t want to worry about my bag clashing with my clothes. I also don’t baby it as much as I baby my red bags since stains wouldn’t be as obvious (not that I abuse my bags or anything).

To me a black City is more likely to have lower cost per wear than a red one over time. But if that doesn’t matter, and you are fine with an occasional pop of color, then red.

Both, but first…..Black City is the most iconic and that’s for a reason or two. It is iconic; after all it’s a motorcycle bag, you won’t get tired of the color, it goes with everything and will age and wear with a minimum of care.

After a bit then get the red, just because it’s glorious! (I’m pretty sure Nicole is carrying an 05 Rouge Theater, a repeat of the 03 Red.)

I never get tired of seeing these pictures from the early 2000s.

Be true to your style. Buy one in the best condition you can find, no matter the year. If you're a black bag person, go there. Lots of people are, lots aren't. I personally love the vintage Bal browns, which are less matchy matchy but still look great with black.
