Hello all,

So I purchased a New lock in Patent Lady Grey in 2013. The patent is a beautiful pearl grey. Somewhere during the years I have owned it, it turned yellow/brownish on me. I have probably used it a handful of times for concern of colour transfer. I store it as per all my bags: stuffed with tissue in its' dustbag in my closet.

The change of colour is fairly consistent apart from a strange spot on the front as you will see in the photos. I really don't like the colour it has turned to and don't know what to do with it so it just sits in my closet. Should I sell it as is (as a flawed item essentially) or change it's colour using a spa service here in Australia?

I should mention that I live in part of Australia with a climate similar to that of Florida and have done a lot of research about oxidation of patent leather, suffice to say that if I ever get a patent item lighter than black/navy I will have to be prepared for the change in colour, or to sell it as soon as I see oxidation in the coating.

I have attached a photo of what the new lock is meant to look like and mine as it is now. There is a slight glimmer of what it used to look like, which I have circled in blue.

Has anyone had a light patent bag turn on them? What did they do with it? Sell it or keep it and still use or have the colour changed?

I also have an "ivory" patent lady dior which is slowly turning cream and I have started thinking about what I will do with that once it is too far gone for me as well.

Heat over time will make patent turn...its inevitable; same as having off-white painted walls... over time it will turn darker and darker cream.
Store patent in a cool place, like a cool closet floor in the dark, to stall the change.

Choose original colours that are warm tone (pinks, creams) or dark, where the change isn't that visible like red or black.
I have an LV Bleecker from the 90s that used to be the cream vernis, its now darker mustard. I don't mind so much since its a warm colour and the colour is still warm, so the lining doesn't look disparate. I still use it occasionally (doesn't fit much so not often anymore).
Unfortunately, cool colours turning will produce some odd colours and the lining is such a stark difference.

You won't get much if you sell it, i'd rather get it dyed a darker colour.

Working in consignment for over a decade, I’ve learned to stay away from all things patent leather. It’s just not worth it in the long run (Dior and Chanel being some of the worst offenders).

If I were you, I would keep it and look into getting the bag dyed black. It’s a cutie!

I didn't know that any light color patent will change, thought only white or cream .
I had a small cream patent bag & it became totally bright yellow.
Does light color leather change too or only patent?

My red patent leather bag is beautiful but only a few months old. Hope it stays this wayb

TBH I also have a LV Alma BB in Pomme (candy apple red) which is from 2012 and it has barely changed from the day I got it; and I use it almost weekly.....but I also have an Alma PM in Beige Poudure (beige with pink undertone) and this is also doing very well....go figure...

I have a sneaky suspicion that despite my best intentions, the fact I wrapped up the patent New Lock in tissue paper and placed it in its dust bag and into its Dior box for months at a time might have been its undoing - I have read some pages about patent leather which suggest it just needs to breathe and this can help reduce yellowing.

Thanks for your response; I have spent a lot of time the last few weeks looking at resale sites to see how Patent changes and have seen some terrible colour changes - some of the bags you could not guess the original colour.

I have a black lambskin new lock pochette so I don't think I would want to have 2; I have been thinking about navy and recently sent a quote to a bagspa to see what they can do. They advised me they cannot dye it navy, only black. They said the final result could have inconsistencies in the colouring and would prefer not to do it.

So now I think my options are to either sell it or take the plunge and attempt to dye it navy myself.
