There seem to be those items every now and then that go viral in popularity and I go insane researching, drooling over pictures, and counting pennies (obviously, because they always seem to be the expensive ones...)

For example shoes: balancing the act between throwing sheckels at shoes and paying my bills, I'm always hesitant to take the plunge on a pricey pair. Sometimes months go by while I weigh my options, then all of a sudden--I have a change of heart? Is it too late now? Is this trend going to die? Should I save my piggy bank and wait for the next shoe that captures my heart?

It really sounds pathetic to care so much ("Wear what you want! Life is short!") but do you guys ever have this internal debate? Are there styles you purchased that you came to regret later? Or any that you are soooo glad you finally joined the bandwagon?

For example, I LOVE my Stuart Weitzman 5050s, even though they have been "happening" for years... I hope I never break up with these boots. And I think the Louboutin Pigalles / So Kates, Jimmy Choo Anouks, and Manolo BB styles are here to stay.

Then.. it is really hard for me to admit that I look at some shoes like the Givenchy Shark Lock boots and Chloe Susanna boots, and think "I don't like you anymore..." Even harder when a lonely pair sits at the back of my closet.

Now, I am contemplating whether this will happen (or has already happened) to Valentino Rockstuds and Charlotte Olympia Kitty flats.

This also happens to certain handbags for me. Personally, I am so over the Celine Luggage and Valentino Glam Lock bags, but will never stop loving a classic Chanel flap even though they are all equally ubiquitous in the "on trend" world.

All things pass, I suppose. And at the end of the day, I should care less about "in vs out" and just do what I like...But are you torn about items in your closet / shopping cart?

Yup,I have put my Celine Luggage for sale. I thought it would be a 'classic', but somehow it's just not. I don't have that feeling anymore I got when I first purchased it. Now my Chanel flaps, those are classics ....

If I've already bought a bag and it gets a bit too 'on-trend' I may put them away for a couple of years until the high-street approximates have gone away. The thing I dislike about 'popularity' is the media (print or net) has too much to say about my bag (including the price) and then everyone talks about your bag for 3 minutes when you meet them, tiring (unless it's a tPF meet)! When everyone's forgotten, I'll get it out again (if I find it). Good bags last forever (and they should). If I like something, it's usually because I actually like it.

If the 'rush' starts before I've bought it, I have to admit it does make me think twice. Not just because of the 'it' factor but also the quality tends to go down as the company speeds-up the production. There's always something nice, new, round the corner (and sometimes buried in my wardrobe). It's not like I'm going to run out of bags sometime soon.

Well said! Definitely notice quality tends to go down as brands capitalize on successful designs.

I'm waiting for my bags to turn into the Fendi Spys, Chloe Paddington, Dior Saddle Bags of yesterday. So far, so good. Maybe I gravitate towards more classic styles, I don't know. I have a Chloe Paraty and I still love it. Maybe that's passé, but I don't care. I was actually debating the Paraty with the Celine luggage nano in 2011, and everyone kept telling me Celine because it was just "so chic" but I liked the Chloe better. Glad I stuck to it! I don't have any urge for Celine luggage anymore.

Chanel flaps, classic. Marc by Marc baby Aidan which I think still works. A couple others in speedy/doctor's bag shapes. Not sure what I'll do when/if they go way out of style...

I prefer the older bags as you don't see them coming and going. I recently saw a woman while shopping with the MJ Stam, and it has renewed my love for it. Now, I'm searching for one yet again!

This is why I tend to avoid the It-bags, or at least debate for a while, to make sure I really love it before purchase. Usually, by the time I bite the bullet, the craze would have died down by then, and I can get a wonderful quality bag for a fraction of the original price. This is how I got the XL coral YSL muse, and the forest Chloe capsule paddington; years after they were hot, I paid about $350 for each new. Helps to learn authentication skills, and to wait diligently!

I personally hate when items I own become the "it" items-for me that is a turnoff. I do, however, like what I like, so I don't necessarily care if it is the rage or not-if I love something, I wear it. Period.

This is great advice: Put bags away for a couple of years until the high-street approximates have gone away. I dug out my Tod's Dbag this last xmas and I have to say my love is renewed :)

Glad to hear this, lanarmc!

lightmint, I struggle with this a little bit - is it out of style or not. But, you know, I don't give a flying flip about what someone else thinks about my bag. It is Mine. I bought it because I Love It. As you can see from my avatar, I stocked up before they quit making the Stam.
