What's your unpopular opinion on luxury shopping?

The Row is glorified basics that do not warrant their price tags. Every time I see their merchandises, I am in awe at the lack of desirability of it all. $2000 for a pair of cotton khaki pants. $1600 for a white cotton button shirt. Anyone who is willing to pay for these prices are only chasing the clout and hype. I simply cannot get behind this brand. You can buy the exact same thing without any discernible differences at Uniqlo or COS. You buy The Row just to say you buy The Row.

I feel this way about a lot of other similar brands like LP and BC. I can buy very similar quality at theory, Vince, etc for a fraction of the price. Row, LP also have iconic items that are so well known it’s a joke to call them quiet luxury.

I think Cucinelli does a pretty good job at making their clothes desirable. I used to work in a department store that carried it and I was always impressed by their brand reps who would come visit periodically. They are impeccably well dressed. Perfectly tailored suits with their signature puffer vest over top. It looked very good. It was never my style, but I could appreciate it. It helped that they were always incredibly tall and handsome, too. With LP and BC, I feel at least they are trying to sell you that Italian way of dressing. They've created a pretty strong brand narrative. But I do agree they are also nothing more than basics with an insane price tag.

When I'm looking at The Row, take their Spring 2014 collection lookbook, I think to myself, who would want to pay their prices to dress like that? And their e-commerce is so dry. There's no romance or storytelling to lure you in.

I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion, persay, but I have mostly stopped shopping from brands that don’t have an item in their stores and make me pay for it up front to bring it in.

I can understand a $20,000 exotic handbag needing some sort of commitment from a buyer, but a commodity item like a skirt or shirt should be brought in for trying on no questions asked. Tying up my money to try on an item for size or style is a hard pass from me.

This practice has significantly reduced the brands I’ll buy from, so that’s kind of nice

Playing games is not luxury; having to be loyal to an sa or a location with rediculous prespend isnot luxury; having to prove yourself to spend your money is not luxury it's manufactured exclusivity'.
To me luxury is walking into a store being greeted politely, asking for an item and being able to buy it.
Actually my most luxurious experience was walking into a store just to browse ( dressed very simply ) and being offered a chance to sit and relax with a drink.
I had explained I was having a day out to myself and the lovely salesperson brought me a full silver tea service while I relaxed and enjoyed.
I actually did not end up buying a thing that day, but the experience so impressed me that I became a frequent customer of this company. (Oh and I had never been in that store before, so it's not like they knew me)

Would you care to shout the name of the store?

Absolutely it was the Ralph Lauren women's store on Madison Ave in nyc.
I had other lovely experiences there like dh shopping with me and being offered champagne and getting a bouquet of flowers for my birthday.
I will say however that they did let me know that unfortunately post covid they cannot offer tea or champagne anymore but the service is still so lovely.

One of my good friends works at that store in the women's store on Madison Ave. She is Turkish, did you happen to see or speak with her? You can't miss her, she is stunning! She and I worked together at the Ralph Lauren store in Denver (that no longer exists) in the late 90's.

unpopular opinion: Almost every “quiet luxury” or “old money style” social media or blog post or thread completely misses the point about what old money actually wears.

Those posts are, at best, a social media interpretation of a Hollywood parody.
Diane Keaton in 'Father of the Bride' LOL. Although she totally is. God bless her.

Instagram thinks that Old Money "aesthetic" is looking slick in head-to-toe Ralph Lauren and a blow-dry. The reality is that it's wearing your mother's moth-eaten hand-me-down bespoke sweater, wearing inherited treasures, with weekend drives to your generational estate in a beat-up VW Golf. At least that's how it is over here in the UK.

I have not been there in a little while so I'm not sure if I've seen her
