For my next Chanel purchase, I'd like a pre-loved bag but I'm amazed at such high prices! Not much less than a new bag! Does anyone else feel this way? How do you figure out what the price should be? Anyone ever negotiate?

The used prices are high bc of the price increases in the last few years. The rise affects not just the current retail things but also used pieces, I've definitely noticed that deals are getting harder and harder to find. What price you're comfortable with is different for everyone but I hope that explains a little why the prices seem so high. That's my theory anyway! Lol

Used chanel prices are high, compared to other designers, LV, Marc Jacob, Baleciaga, Chloe... that's why I would just buy new (the difference is small). Then, you get what you want, you get the experience and most important, you know it's 100% authentic. Just look on the bright side, at least used is not more expensive than new, like in hermes' case. Most 2nd hand birkins, kellys and CDC bracelets are significantly more. That's supply and demand for you.

I think what the post is really about is the relatively high price of a used compared to the price of a new bag. A big part of the problem is that ebay has become an online store rather than an auction site. So what you have are sellers all looking at the other items up.... and then pricing their bags based upon that... rather than looking what things have actually sold for. So the black jumbo in great shape which should be selling for $3000-$3300 is priced at $3900 just because 7 other people have them priced that high. So ebay has basically become a bag museum. Everyone shows off the bags they have.... with few of them really interested in selling what they own. Color also makes a big difference. The value of a used white is less than a used black and a used black is worth less than a used red. So you of course have to factor that in. Even if a seller has a flat price for their bag... feel free to message them and offer them less... and hold firm. The longer their item has been up with no interest... the more interested they'll be in a real offer. Just base your offer on other items that actually sold and the condition of the bag.

^^^Technically if it is a BIN with no best offer option, you are NOT supposed to contact the seller with offers per ebay's rules. Yes, I realize people still do this but just saying...

Like was said upthread, it's because the prices have gone up so much since 2010. People are paying much more for new now and trying to recoup cost, not give it away.

Actually.. you're not allowed to ask them to sell the item off ebay. You're perfectly allowed to tell the seller you're willing to pay a lower price than their BIN if they will revise the price. There are no ebay issues with that that I know of. What ebay doesn't want is private offers for private sales.

As someone who has sold some luxury pieces on eBay I always search for previous auctions that have actually sold. Then use those prices to determine what my bag should go for. Of course the factors of condition, colour, type of leather and size are important. Also whether or not a bag is considered seasonal or a classic. I think the issue is there are a lot of actual consignment stores on eBay looking to make a profit so the prices are generally a bit higher than retail which is crazy!

As a buyer I would expect to pay $500 or less off retail for a Chanel classic. It's a bit trickier with vintage since there can be so much variation with the condition of the purse. Unless it was a rare or coveted colour I might consider paying retail. End of the day, only you can decide what you feel comfortable paying for a used purse.

Yes. Exactly AUTOGRAPHHOUND1.

Very true. But it is harder and harder to figure out if you are getting ripped of though. If you go to a resale shop (taking out the factor of consignment) they should be selling things 30-70% off retail prices. I see most sellers these days only about 10-20%. I guess we are coming out of a stagnant period and like a previous poster mentioned, people are trying to recoup their costs, regardless of the actual value.

This is very interesting, I didn't know that in the resale market, a used red classic was worth more than a black one for example.

And talking about style, which holds the value better, the jumbo or the m/l ??? :thinkin:

I look at what similar bags have sold for and take into consideration the demand and inventory for such item. If it's a rare style/color I expect to pay more. You can also expect to pay more if the item is unused.

You aren't supposed to negotiate unless there is BIN but that doesn't stop people.
Likes others have said there are a lot of consigners out to make $$ so they price their items pretty high. They run a business and aren't worried about inventory sitting for a while. You may find a deal here and there but just keep in mind others are probably watching those auctions too. It just might take a little longer to find your pre-loved bag.

Series of bags are important too, 12 series and prior have good quality caviar that hold the shape well, hard to get crease marks compared with current 'soft caviar'. 'Vintage' Chanel from the 90s have even thicker/heavier caviar, the quality of hardware is much superior IMO. But of course it does have that 'dated look' because Chanel tweak the classic flap from time to time.

It's almost like Hermes Birkins, if you get the right color combo it's guarantee to hold its value and the ultra rare will fetch you more than what you've paid for.
