What's a gel lamp that works for most gel nail brands?

The CND lamp works with any gel polish that's UV-curable, and it's very durable too. There are cheaper UV lights on the market as well, if you don't like the price of the CND one.

I'm new to doing gel nails at home and was wondering if you needed to use a different gel lamp for each gel nail brand or is there one that works for most of them?

You are smart to put some effort and research into your lamp selection. The lamp is the backbone of your system and a bad selection there will ruin everything else. And although I am a serious discount shopper, lamps are one area where you really do get what you pay for, so don't scrimp on it.

The CND Shellac lamp is generally considered to be an excellent CFL UV lamp with a five finger cure. That is probably your lowest cost, good quality option. You might also choose to go with an LED lamp IF you are committed to this and IF you are okay with only using LED curable gel polishes. In the long term, LED lamps are less costly, but are a really big initial outlay. Also, they won't cure CND Shellac, Light Elegance, NSI Polish Pro and a few other gel polish brands. Among the quality LED lamps-Gelish 18g, OPI GelColor and Artistic Colour Gloss Pro 30 are considered to be very good. Rumour has it that OPI is going to be coming out with a lower cost LED sometime soon, and that CND Shellac will also be coming out with an LED lamp that will cure Shellac in early 2014. HTH

This was really helpful, thank you! I think I'm gonna go with the CND lamp since I've read a lot of good things about it.
