If you love the patent (gosh knows I do) then I'd seriously think about getting it repaired. Since the leather isn't cut through, just the finish, a competent cobbler can fix that. Many do it with high quality clear nailpolish but there are patent leather refinishing sprays that accomplish the same thing.
Firstly my dears, let me say a big THANK YOU for all of your input. I have taken on board every suggestion, e-mailed with Nitza a few times (poor woman) and finally made a decision. It is a complicated decision that involves the cancellation of my Madeleine Boot order The pic I saw of a TPF'er with the same size calves told me NO WAY, I would swim in them) and a possible return of one other bag, but the decision is made.
