I recently got my first ever luxury hand bag, my dream bag that I wanted for years, a medium Gucci Marmont. Hubby got it for me as a gift and I am obsessed with it. The issue is I am so obsessed that I finnd myself wanting to carry it all the time and part of me worries that it is going to age too quickly because I really only have the one "fancy" bag. I am thinking of maybe getting another designer bag to have something to swap it out with. Do I sound crazy?

Another bag that I love the look of is the Saint Laurent small loulou puffer with the silver hardware. I love that it is dressy but still big enough for a daily bag. Ideally I would adore the YSL medium envelope but its a bit too small for daily wear for me and I would want it down the track as an evening bag. I know it is quite similar to the Gucci in that they are both black and puffy and have a chain strap, but this is my favourite style of bag and in the forseeable future I wouldnt buy a super procey bag in a colour other than black due to wear and tear concerns.

I've also thought about getting a Tory Burch Kira maybe in a nude colour to swap it out with but I just know that I will be preferring to use the Gucci instead.

So please tell me do you experience this kind of thinking when you had your very first luxe bag? Did you collection grow base don some kind of logic or was it just about getting the next bag that you loved the most? I feel like I have offically entered handbag addiction territory

Oops forgot to add, I have also considered getting a preowned Marmont in the dusty pink colour as well!

I had a time machine I would have stopped with one luxury bag and fully enjoyed it for a long while rather than adding in others before I had time and pleasure from the first. Luxury bags aren't like your average bags or clothing items, they won't wear out as fast as most items we own. You can easily find Gucci bags on the resale market that are 25 years old and look amazing. I would enjoy the bag you just got before rushing to buy something else. Pre-owned is a great way to save money and make sure the styles are for you ; I'm all for that route! The Kira is really lovely and would allow you to have something very useable while saving wear on your Marmont.

Yes that is a very good point. Maybe I need to chill out a bit and just enjoy this beautiful bag for a while!!

I’m going to actually encourage a second bag as long as you can easily afford it. I like having variety in my collection as it keeps down wear and keeps me from getting bored with a bag I love.

And, I would also encourage you to ONLY get bags that are the intersection of loooove it and functional to use. Many beautiful bags are just not ones that are workable for life. You’ll want to get bags that easily rotate in and out of wear because they fit you.

Enjoy the journey!

Beautiful first bag and yes….you have entered handbag addiction territory!

my first luxury bag was an LV speedy 25 that I saved up for over a year for…you know what’s funny, I can’t even remember what my second bag was! If I really think about, I’m 90% sure it was a preloved LV Galliera. I enjoyed my first bag sooooo much for several years before getting anymore and nothing ever replaced that feeling. I am trying to replicate that feeling by saving for my next bag and not buying it until I’m 100% ready to pay cash!
If you can afford another bag, definitely go for it! But if you can’t, enjoy this “first bag” feeling-you’ll still love bags but nothing replaces the first bag feeling

I think it was my pink logo Dior Saddle bag. I was in my teens and most of my money went to tuition and bills, so purchases were done slowly.

My thoughts are to do whatever will increase your enjoyment more. If a second bag alleviates anxiety and you truly love it, go for it, but if it would just cause twice the worry, hold off and enjoy your first one.

I agree with @kellytheshopper though, nothing replaces that "first bag" feeling, so don't feel compelled to rush. It's really easy to get swept up in chasing that feeling or wanting to have a collection, but make sure it's love. There will always be another bag released to want.

If you only want to carry your Marmont, then do so. A luxury bag will last for much longer than most cheaper bags and it's serviceable. You can send it to Gucci for a re-dye etc.
If the bag is the most practical size and type for you and that's what keeps you hooked to it then something in a similar type and size would be a great swapper. Another (preloved?) Marmont or a TB in a similar size f.e.

But just don't feel guilty over preferring to carry the Marmont. It's yours. And I bet your husband is over the moon that you use the bag a lot!

Great introspective questions! Self-reflection definitely helps derail compulsive shopping. That dusky pink Gucci Marmot is gorgeous btw.

Answer: My bag collection grew based on gut feeling. For the luxe bags (vintage Chanel lambskin classic flap bought in 2019 and a tan Loewe mini puzzle bought in 2021), I waited for the thrill to hit again and researched, researched, researched for 3+ months. (e.g., size, colors, leather quality, hardware, pricing, etc.)

My research rule stopped my compulsive contemporary bag hunting; I'd always find a few things that didn't set well with me like when I learned a bag wasn't hardwearing. Pre-owned is a great way to go too, since the bags already have some character and don't need babying.

My daily bags in 2019 were contemporary; a cement beige See by Chloé Hana during the day, and a gold leather multi Marc Jacobs snapshot for fun, casual nights out at a bar or going to the movies. I've whittled down my collection in the last 3 years too from 30+ to 17 handbags and counting. I guess I keep realizing which bags I really need.

Thank you so much for all the feedback and sorry for taking so long to respond!! I have decided to hold off for now and just try to enjoy my Gucci as much as I can and consider adding another high end bag a little bit later on. Plus the whole covid situation is a pain right now in australia so chances of actually going out anytime soon is pretty slim. Hope everyone is having a great new year!!
