Food What type of wine would you recommend for a newly turned 21 y/o?

I actually like the sterling brand wine. Chardonnay the best. I think the 2001 is my favorite. It does not seem very harsh to me and not very expensive. Also estancia chardonnay and j loehr were not too bad. If you like sweet champagne go for asti. Moscato is also a great sweet sparkling wine.

all of the wines everyone listed are nice, but speaking from someone who is NOT a wine person at all and i think most of it tastes nasty, i know exactly what you'd like since you seem to like sweet drinks.
its a totally cheap wine (4$ a bottle) called arbor mist. they come in different flavors and are totally fruity and hardly even taste like wine. they're GREAT.

I am a huge wine fan, collector (and drinker, heehee). Every person's wine likes/dislikes may vary tremendously, so it's really impossible to find a "one size fits all" for wine recommendations.

I recommend you visit some wine stores in the Boston area (where you've listed you're located) that have tastings. Usually these are free or cost a nominal fee. You can taste a variety of wines and talk with the store staff to learn more about the wines. Based on the tastes you like (and your price range!), they can recommend good bottles for you to buy.

Here are a few stores with tastings I found via Google to get you started:

BRIX in the South End: http://www.brixwineshop.com/index.html

Brookline Liquor Mart: http://www.blmwine.com/ (cheesy name but it looks interesting per the website)

Wine Bottega (I couldn't find a website) It's located on Hanover St., phone 617-227-6607.

There's also a wine class for beginners: http://www.localwineevents.com/Greater-Boston-Wine/event-159908.html If you want to get into wine, taking a class is a fun and educational way to do it!!

Good luck and cheers!

Cave Springs Riesling is excellent. It's not very expensive ($15ish in Ontario) but it might be tough to find in the States. It's from a Niagara region winery.

I like the sweeter wines, but am not a huge alcohol drinker period. I had a Malbec (medium bodied red) at Fogo de Chao (brazilian bbq) that was awesome though. And while on vacation in Michigan, I stumbled across a free wine tasting and came away with Harvest Apple and a Raspberry dessert wine that were both nice and sweet. I was able to taste undertones of the apple and raspberry in both those wines.

I'd suggest finding a wine tasting near you, and going to test the waters. Most times I really had no clue until I tasted the wine in person. Any Bevmo stores or any wineries near you?
