What type/brand/size safe do you use for your jewelry?

Hi everyone!

I'm wondering what brand of safes you use to store your precious jewelry? Is there a type that is best? I have just a few pieces, but I want to know they're okay when they aren't being worn. I googled safes and I'm a little overwhelmed at the possibilities. Do you use the ones with keys or with combonations? The ones that are free standing or the ones that bolt down to the ground or wall? Thanks in advance for your advice!

If it's on the small side, where it could easily be carried, I'd go with a bolted down one.

I like combinations better than keys. Keys I can lose. Combinations I can store on my phone as a note or mock phone number. No one will know what it is for.

I would also make sure it's fire safe. I don't know the specifics, but it should be protected up to a certain degree of heat (like maybe 1000 degree?). That would make it a good place to store any important documents like deeds or birth certificates.

We have 2 safes - one built in to the wood framing of a closet, and the other was set in to the foundation of our house. The one built in to the closet is just begging burglars to chop, grab, and go. The one set in the foundation is pretty much burglar proof, but a real pain to use since it's on the floor.

So I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone has any good suggestions as I'd like to have a safe that's both securely in place and convenient. I haven't figured out yet what that is...

I have several- my biggest one is 3,000 lbs and required special movers to place it and secure it.... but I have some smaller ones too.

I would recommend looking into one that is long lasting in fire or fire proof and if you get one that is electronic, make sure you find out what the backup open procedure is if the battery dies. <----- that can be a huge pain.

We are having designs done for expanding our home. We will have one installed under the floor in a closet. No one will be able to tell its even there.

Vegas, that's exactly where we have ours - had the foundation poured around it in the floor of a closet. It is SUCH a royal pain to get in to! My mom had hers in the same place and rarely used it because of this. We rarely use ours either. You may want to consider having it somehow fashioned in to a wall, or at least in the floor in a more open area.

Hey thanks for the advice! I know I'd have to almost lie on the floor to get into it.
I think if just the base of it were set into the foundation, it'd be easier. Then it takes up closet space. Better to have something you'd use, then keeping stuff at the bank.

Or how about having a block of cement poured in to a wall, and mounting it low on the wall in your bedroom or bathroom? The problem with it being in a closet floor is that closets generally have stuff (shoes, boxes, whatever) stored on the floor. But even if you keep the closet floor super neat, the lighting usually isn't very good in a closet, especially since the safe will be beneath hanging clothing.

And yes, when I used to use the safe I'd either be lying on the floor with a flashlight in hand, or sitting cross legged for waaaay too long trying to get the safe open. :p
