Hi there!

2 months ago, I was at my local Chanel boutique and tried on the Chanel 19 bag (small/black) and loved it. Unfortunately I did not purchase it right away and when I went back a few days later, every Chanel 19 in small/black in Sydney had sold out, I ended up putting my name on the waitlist.

Fast forward a few weeks, I’m still waiting for that phone call from my SA but the price has just gone up by almost $800 AUD (from $9090 to $9880). So now, I’m questioning if it’s actually worth it. I have a very small Chanel collection: Medium Reissue, Old medium Boy, and a small Chanel Gabrielle which I love and is hands down my most used Chanel bag. I would love to get a Chanel Classic Flap in medium or small (I had a chance to get a small CF in the Tiffany blue colour in 2018 in store but didn’t get it and that’s been my biggest regret so far!). Having said that, I don’t think I’ll get that much use out of a Classic Flap since I hardly ever use my Reissue and Boy, but when I use my Reissue, I do think it’s very functional bag and I love all the compartments/pockets.

So should I:

  • Bite the bullet and get a Chanel Classic Flap knowing it’ll be a forever bag even though I won’t be using it every day. But what handbag collection is without a Chanel CF?!
  • Get the Chanel 19 bag to use as an everyday bag, knowing that it might no longer be “on trend” in a few years and possibly discontinued like the Gabrielle bag (I still use mine though)
  • Get a Cartier Juste un Clou ring to match my bracelet (I think there will be a price increase at Cartier soon) + a small Loewe puzzle bag (I went and tried it on in store and loved it, and I don’t’ have a bag like that in my collection yet).

Thanks for your suggestion and help!

Thanks for your response. First of all, I'm more of a Kelly person than a Birkin person, but I hear ya! But I don't want to purchase a Birkin or Kelly from resale sites and I don't want to spend all of my pleasure money for the next 12 months at Hermes........

I agree, I don't understand why so many people keep repeating these exact same words everywhere.
People keep on parroting others so nonchalantly as if anyone can just walk into Hermes and pick a Birkin of their choice off from the shelf, let alone even a chance of being offered one in an ugly undesirable color.

I wonder how many of these people saying this even own a B/K or even have a chance of getting offered to buy one.

Is it really that easy to get a new Birkin for $10K?

Right. Not to mention a Birkin is NOTHING like a CF or a 19! Lol

@chocobo124 surprisingly I think I’d go for the ring + Loewe. The ring is something you can wear and see everyday. The more popular Loewe get the more the prices would increase with them as well! You have three Chanel bags already; I say switch it up a little for some variety!

Maybe take the proceeds that you’d save from getting a Loewe and ring and save for a preloved cf?

Get what you will use and will wear often and what your heart really desires. Don't worry about trends, as long as you like it that's all that matters even if the trend is out. I love my classic flaps, very happy and no regrets with my purchase, but I don't get to use them often. I feel like I have to dress up to use them, I'm not someone who can casually wear it with gym clothes for example. I would definitely be able to pull off the 19 more often with my daily wardrobe and that would be money well spent. Still I did not get the 19 because personally I don't need a Chanel brand bag in that style since other brands offer similar styles for half the cost and similar quality. There's nothing else like a classic flap so I just had to have it even if it just sits in my closet most days.

If I could get a new Birkin or Kelly for $10k or $15k, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but it needs to be in the exact size/colour/leather I want, but that's just a fantasy XD I have purchased some Hermes items (mainly shoes) and I mostly just order them on the website so I don't have to play any games like sucking up to the SA.

THIS.
I can think of a few bags (YSL College and Loulou, LV pochette metis) that look like the Chanel 19 and function like the 19 but at 1/2 the price or less. But if I were sensible and completely logical, I wouldn't be purchasing designer bags in the first place XD

There is definitely something about Chanel ;-)

I do find that the items I get the most out of in terms of cost per wear are jewlery items, they are also very portable and take up very little storage space, unlike bags. I heard Cartier prices are going up by 10% in mid March so might as well do it now.

The Loewe Puzzle was only $4250AUD last year and it's now $4750! I tried it on last year, I liked it but not as much as I did when I tried it on this week, it might've something to do with my outfit. If I do get it, it'll replace my current work bag - a Marc by Marc Jacobs Hillier bag (I still can't believe they discontinued the M by M Jacobs line!), and it'll make the perfect travel bag when I go to Thailand and Singapore next month.

I'm really scared of buying pre-loved especially a bag in the price range of Chanel. I mean, it's a hard pill to swallow paying $15k (AUD) for a bag but it would be just heart breaking to pay pay $9k and find out later that it's a fake :( This is one reason I never buy pre-loved, I'd rather pay more for peace of mind.

Having said that, I've spotted a pre-loved baby blue rectangular mini and I'm tempted......

I would go a pre loved classic flap from a trusted long standing consignment store. My thinking with the Chanel 19 is that it is a lot of money to spend on something that may not have the longevity. However, if it went a little out of style and you still loved it the same, then that’s less of a consideration.

Yes exactly, I got the YSL college bag instead of the 19 and that baby is solid. It's so easy to wear with just about anything. Adding a 19 would purely be for adding another CC logo to collection, but functionally it's about the same with less bulkier chains and a more youthful style (don't hate me for saying that lol).

I do like the College bag a lot, it's my favourite Saint Laurent bag (I don't have any YSL in my collection yet). I came very close to buying it in Milan last year but because I hadn't really planned to purchase the bag, I left it too late and I wasn't able to purchase it in the end. I was quite upset about it for the rest of my trip XD
Enjoy yours.

I say Cartier ring and Lowe bag. Funny you should mentioned a small Gabrielle bag as your most used bag. I have the backpack, but have always wanted to add a hobo to my collection since they came out. I thought it was over priced last year when I had heard they were getting discontinued. I have been looking at pre-loved ones for the last year but am not entirely comfortable buying pre-loved in fear of getting a super fake.

This… I had the same concerns when I got the 19 a few years back. I was also one of the skeptical ones at first. However, surprisingly I use this bag the most alongside my 22 compared to my medium CF and let alone the jumbo CF. It’s awesome for travel/errands and super versatile with casual and business casual attire. At this point, trendy or not, I absolutely have no regrets. If you enjoy a style regardless of trend and get plenty of heavy-duty use out of it, it’s definitely a practical choice in terms of financial and emotional ROI.
