Hi Ladies,
My husband has offered to upgrade my e ring as my push present. My current e ring is a 1.5 carat princess cut which was so popular 9 years ago when we got engaged.

I am so confused on what shape to go with this time. I really like the cushion cut but I'm afraid it will end up being a trendy style that I will tire of in the next 10 years? Would you ladies suggest I go with the classic round?

I'm looking to get a 3 carat vs1 f/g color ring. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Round brilliant in a 3 carat is a beautiful stone! It faces up beautifully and will always be classic. I think after a certain carat weight, a cushion or step cut - Asscher or emerald - is amazing, but a 3 carat RB? Absolutely! HTH! Do let us know what you decide.

I received a princess cut about the same time you did. I still love it and personally don't find it trendy. If I were to upgrade I would choose emerald or asscher. Let us know what you decide. It is such a personal decision.

I would go Round. Reasoning: easiest to get the best quality, will face up larger than a princess and many cushions because those hold weight in the bottom and middle, will sparkle really well when well cut and when well cut you won't "need" as high of a color to get a nice bright white stone as the body color won't show as much as it will in a fancy shape like a princess or fancy. However, you need to get what you love, and if you love a cushion, get a cushion.

I'm leaning towards round at this point. I love all your advice and the reasoning, please keep it coming.

I don't know much about diamonds, what would you ladies look for in terms of cut, color, clarity, etc?

A 3 carat round solitaire sounds soooo dreamy!!! :D It's definitely a classic and there's no limit to a certain type of wedding band or anniversary band that will go fabulously with it! :graucho: To be honest, a 3 carat round is my ultimate dream ring, so i say go for it girl!!!! Maybe you could causally just "drop by" a jewelry store and try one on, I think that will really help you determine how you feel about it.

I love cushion cut and round. My hubby gave me a round halo for e ring 4 years ago.... Personally I look at color and clarity as my priority in terms of 4 C's...... DEF color range and clarity vs2 and better for sure.....but everyone's different.... I was willing to sacrifice size for clarity and color.....

I did similar, but it was for 10 yr anniversary!
We upgraded my 1 ct princess to a 3.67 RB. I love cushions too so I had my jeweler do 4-double prongs where the corners would be, it sort of squares up my round stone. I have no regrets.
Since you already know about what size you have the carat covered. I personally rank cut next then color and clarity.

Cut trumps all. Don't sacrifice cut quality for any other factor, cut quality is why it sparkles. There's a reference thread above in the Stickies with a "cheat sheet" for rounds. Focus on the best cut money can buy.

For color, I'd look around an H, still white, but not paying a premium. Clarity probably VS1 or VS2, clean to the eye and the mind. Carat will obviously be based on budget from those parameters. If you include fluorescence in your positives, you can get a slightly larger stone as well.

Not quite your size range but an idea:

I would go round because it's my favorite cut. I personally find 3 carats to be overkill in a round, so I would go 2-2.5. Cut is absolutely the most important spec unequivocally, and then I personally put color next, followed by clarity.

Do you know how you want to set it? That can influence stone choice as well...for example, a ring with side stones will need to be close in color (usually higher), whereas a true solitaire won't show as much color and can be a little warmer. Also consider metal color and overall design.
