What is the best way to clean marks off vernis??

I apologise if this is covered somewhere already - I did look in the FAQ's but couldn't find it.

I'm wondering how to get marks off vernis. My amarante bag has a few small spots and smears of something on the surface that I can't seem to just buff off with the polishing cloth. I wondered if I should wipe it over with a damp cloth, but am hesitant to go ahead and do it without being sure it won't damage the finish. What is the best way to clean marks off vernis??

I have the amarante alma, and the dust cloth does not work for me at all- I just take a normal towel and buff it, and it all comes off, and it is still super shiny- I dont wet the towel at all-

Is it ok to use a damp cloth? Would it damage the leather at all?
