What is the best brand brietling or Cartier or Rolex ?

Depends what you are looking for:
1. Breitlings are decidedly sporty watches with aerospace heritage (might be a plus or neutral) (are heavily discounted on grey market = plus if bought on third market or minus since they don't hold their values)

2. Rolex can be found literally everywhere (makes servicing them incredibly easy) (they have a strong brand image which leads to their products holding their own on the secondary market) (they have utilitarian movements which makes them incredibly robust)

3. Cartier (heritage as being the first company to produce a wristwatch) (the only company that has active R & D in haute horlogerie out of the three) (a decidedly finer watch with respect to finishing but much less robust = more jewelry than tool).

I like Rolex Datejust 36 mm style the best. I think I like Breitlings because they are not so common in the public at least to me. I like the Cartier Tank francisase the best of the Cartier watches.

Automatic watch technology is at the point where you will be more or less satisfied technically by any of those choices. My best recommendation is to head to your nearest watch store and try on as many watches as you can to see what you like best.

I would also recommend looking at other companies such as nomos, zenith, jaeger lecoultre, piaget, etc...

When I first wanted to purchase a watch, I was pretty much settled on the Rolex Millgauss. However after visiting the store, my preferences became much clearer and ended up with something entirely different.

As for the Rolex being too common, it's also a good thing if you ever want to have your watch fixed down the road. (There will always be someone to fix it and a source for parts)

Rolex is also one of the most commonly recommended starter watches (aka MSRP under 10,000$) by haute horlogerie master watchmakers such as François Paul Journe.

Cartier is my favorite. Between their heritage and creating the first real wrist watch, their high end wrist watches and the Innovation. They make Rolex look incredibly boring. My best friends hubby collects timepieces and has one of their skeleton watches. It's the most beautiful, intricate and modern timepieces I have ever seen. I don't know much about breitling other than their big and sporty. Not my style.

Great advice thanks

The 36mm two tone datejust that I want is under 10,000. That's a good price for me

I doubt you would be disappointed either! Rolex has also recently increased the time between their recommended service intervals.
I also like the Cartier Tank Francisas two tone in the medium size with the date but without the date is also fine. LOL. I use to work in Fashion jewerlry but I would have to help out with the watches in watch repair.

i would prefer an automatic. But I do know that the Cartier medium tank is quartz and large size is the automatic. I may need to get the large instead of the medium because it comes with the date.

It comes down to preference and wether or not a 500 to 1000$ repair bill every 5 years is annoying enough to put you off.
