I know we often hear the debate about whether Chanel bags are an “investment.” While I don’t think they are an investment in the way stocks are, I do think they’re less risky to purchase than people may assume when they look at the price tag, especially because of the continuous price increases.

I recently sold 4 Chanel bags in December 2020 to Fashionphile and thought I’d share with you what I originally paid for each bag and what I sold it for. (Note: These were sold BEFORE the recent price increase, so if I’d waited another month, I probably could’ve received more). Some bags I almost broke even on, while others cost me more to own. With the exception of the 19 bag, I had owned all of these for over a year. When I look at these numbers, it honestly just makes me feel like buying bags at this level is less risky than it seems. I also sold bags from other designers (Gucci, Chloe, Valentino, for example) and their resale value was MUCH worse than Chanel’s.

So, let’s look at the numbers!

BAG #1: Chanel Classic Flap Medium Lambskin GHW Black

  • Original price: $4,700 (I purchased this in France in Aug 2019. This price is after my tax refund).
  • Sold for: $4,500
  • Amount paid: $200
BAG #2: Chanel 19 Black Medium/Regular
  • Original price: $5,256 (I purchased this in Sep 2020 so I only had it for 3 months. I sold it because I didn’t end up liking it but it was past the return window. I was selling a bunch of other bags so I just added this one to the list, but it would’ve been smarter to wait a year or two to sell it since the price increases help resale value).
  • Sold for: $3,500
  • Amount paid: $1,756
BAG #3: Chanel So Black Reissue 225
  • Original price: $5,400 total (purchased this one used, but in excellent condition)
  • Sold for: $4,800
  • Amount paid: $600
BAG #4: Chanel Red Seasonal Flap Bag
  • Original price: $4,300 (includes tax)
  • Sold for: $2,900
  • Amount paid: $1,400
My thoughts?

The most classic bags, like the classic flap and the reissue, had excellent resale values IMO. I had both of those for over a year and I feel the prices I paid were very fair for a year of use.

The seasonal bag and 19 bag resale values make sense to me since one is a seasonal bag that no one would be actively searching for and the 19 bag I had only just purchased 3 months prior (so there hadn’t yet been any price increases to drive up the value).

To be clear, I didn’t purchase any of these with the desire to resell them. I just purchase what I like and if I eventually don’t resonate with a bag anymore, I’ll sell it.

Overall, this “experiment” makes me feel quite comfortable purchasing classic Chanel bags despite their high prices, especially because of the annual price increases (which aid resale value). I’ve actually lost more money purchasing bags from other high-end brands, even if the bags originally cost less.

Not trying to prove anything with this haha, just thought I’d share! I welcome your thoughts. :)

Haha well done op! And thanks for sharing the details.

Ive never sold any Chanel bags, as I can’t part with them, but I have sold many LV bags and SLGs. Most of them were preloved and I’ve always made a small profit, thanks to the constant price increases.

Thanks for sharing. How do you sell your bags? Do you sell thru one particular consignment vendor, several different consignment vendors, or do you sell them yourself (or a combination)? Do you favor one process over another?

I’ve posted about this before that Chanel bags are really easy to sell, and get back all, if not more, than what you paid for them. Due to the price increases, every Chanel bag I’ve sold I’ve always made more money that I paid for it, apart from a Boy bag I sold and I lost £100 but had owned it for about 6 years. I always sell on eBay during the £1 seller fee promotion.

just an example: I listed my WOC on eBay and had a couple of offers to buy it for £1800 and also on another site. I paid £1300 new from the boutique a few years ago so I think that’s great. I decided not to sell in the end as I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the woc and I’ve been using mine a lot more recently, although the lack of space annoys me and I end up walking around with it hanging open because it won’t close easily!! That’s another story though!

If you waited 3 years you would sell them for a small profit... I bought first Chanel jumbo in 2008 for about 1300 euro.. I sold it 10 years later in used condition(wear on the corners) for 3500 euro... my concern is after last price increase I heard many Chanel stuff got fired... I know 3 SA working for more then 10 years in Chanel who got fired. People are not reacting good about their price increases and started to buy different brands.
I know they don’t live from bags income, but if demand for their bags will fall down price on second market will be falling down...

Thanks for sharing. I’ve learned in 15 years of purse collecting that if you wait long enough, classic flaps in caviar/neutral colors will always retain its value or make you money. I’ve never lost money on my Chanel handbag purchases (even the seasonal ones), but I keep them for several years at least.

As with most investments, you make $ when you buy. So I like to buy preowned in mint condition at a great price and hang onto it for awhile. Disclaimer: Not so much anymore, because the fakes have gotten very good in recent years.

Nice! Thanks for sharing! I use similar methodology, and calculate price per wear. For Bag#1 in your example, where you paid $200. If I had worn that bag 20 times, then price per wear would only had been $10 per wear, or less than the price of 2 Tall Moccachinos :-) And about the same level of satisfaction... then definitely good return on my “investment”
