Home & Garden What do you think of ARTIFICIAL PLANTS?

My apartment doesn't get enough sunlight for a real plant.

So, I'm trying to decide between NO PLANT AT ALL or an ARTIFICIAL one.

I was thinking of getting just one, for my fireplace mantle.

Right now I have a large mirror over the fireplace, with two crystal candle-holders to the left side of the mirror with yellowish-gold colored tapered candles in them.

I'm trying to decide if I should just stick with that (the minimalist look), or get some greenery, which would have to be fake.

Any opinions/thoughts/suggestions?

TIA!;)

How about devil's ivy? They're impossible to kill. They thrive in no sun, moderate sun, full sun, everywhere. I have several plants I've had for 30 years--in the same pot and with the same soil, embarrassingly enough. This is the plant you see in restaurant hanging plant baskets. As low-maintenance as they come. You can find them in any grocery store floral department.

I think fake plants look tacky. My friend has them all over her house. I don't understand why?
Spider plants are also impossible to kill. If you did a search of indoor house plants that need little care or light perhaps you might find some that will work.

A nice silk flower arrangement might work for you.

I have one fake plant in a place where I needed something taller, but a real plant wouldn't grow. As long as you keep them to a minimum and keep them clean, I think they look just fine.

You could try some houseplants and just replace them every so often. I have a green thumb when it comes to outdoors plants but tend to neglect my inside ones. I just buy new ones every 6 months or so. Even with some sunlight and watering they succumb to spider mites. They are cheap enough that I don't feel bad tossing them into the yard waste bin and buying new ones a couple of times a year.

I think it really depends on the quality of the plant. My doctor's office has a fake Ficus and it looks SOOOOOOO real. I had to look and feel very closely to figure it out. There is no weird plastic on that tree or anything.

I think fake plants can look beautiful. As long as you don't have too many, they're beautifully realistic in shape and color, and they are not dusty. Some places just need a spot of greenery to brighten it up, and some of us (like me) are plant killers. What's a girl to do?

Real green plants, will clean and filter the air for you creating a healthy environment. Plastic ones not only don't but will often give out 'toxic' fumes, as plastic is petroleum based! Its SO worth making the effort to find a real plant that will thrive in your environment. Someone suggested certain types of ivy - so consult a specialist plant centre. You could even buy special lamps that give 'daylight' rays to help the plant. I do that with orchids in my bathroom as there would not be enough light for them otherwise. Let us know what you choose - and better still post piccies!!!!

That second picture is exactly what I've been trying to find for my home. I love the pedestal planter. What type of plant is that in the second picture in the middle?

No - terrible all around. First they gather dust. Also they take away energy instead of giving it to a room. Best to get something living than plastic or fabric which no doubt contain toxic substances. Some plants like the spider plant are easy to care for and add a lot of decor and beauty to a room.

I'm in the same boat in a north facing apartment with little light but I stick to dried flowers and silk flowers
