Hi guys! This is my first time posting on here, and I actually created this account just for the sake of this question. I am in love with the Sac De Jour and I have been looking at one for quite some time and a friend of mine gave me an opportunity that I just cannot refuse. She purchased a large Sac De Jour (its the one that is 14.2 X 10.7 X 7.4 inches) a couple of years ago and is willing to sell it to me for around $1000.

She lives around four hours away so I have only seen pictures of the bag and a distant memory of when she wore it over a year ago. It is in excellent condition and the only problem I can see with it is minor scratches on the hardware (which is obviously expected) and just selling it because she has grown tired of it.

My only concern is the practicality of the bag and the amount of space I will be given. I am still in graduate school and need something I can put notebooks or possibly a small textbook in.

I can easily go out and buy a small SDJ for everyday use ( and will likely do it if I do not end up buying hers), but I am looking for something I can take to school with me and possibly as a carry on while I travel. I am using a neverfull mm and its holding up just fine. I've just had it since my sophomore year of high school and I am ready for something new and a little more sophisticated.

My friend believes the SDJ will be large enough, but I would love to have another person's opinion on whether or it would be practical. If you don't believe the SDJ is a good choice, would you mind recommending another bag that would meet my needs?

Not practical but if you love it, buy it. Frankly, I think that you should use something more practical on a college campus. I never toted my nice bags around. Too many sticky fingers if you catch my drift.

OP is in graduate school - So I think the SDJ would be fine if you only need to carry a book or two, but I think it will be very heavy. However, it would transition very nicely when you enter the workforce...What color is it?

SDJ is already EXTREMELY heavy so I think adding books inside is a bad idea personally. I was shocked at how heavy it is when I picked it up for the first time and I normally don't even blink at heavy bags. I would try to check one out in person before buying one.

Thank you for pointing out that weight does seem to be an issue, I'm going to have to think about that big time. The bag is black so I don't have to worry about the color going out of style or being to flashy for the work place.

The weight seems to be the only down fall :( I have held the small SDJ before and it was definitely heavy for a bag its size, it just was not something too overwhelming. I was unable to find one in large other than the one that is being offered to me and the seller lives rather far away. I guess my best bet would be to find a day off and make the drive to see her.

I tried on the medium when it first came out and the first thing I did when my SA handed it to me was look inside to try to empty whatever was in it, but it was empty! It felt like it had bricks inside haha. The large also doesn't have the shoulder carry option, I believe. I think you are getting a great price and you could always use it without books if you don't mind a heavy bag. It just might not be the best for school which usually involves a lot of walking and books.

Thank y'all so much for all of the info. Everyone has commented on how heavy the bag is and I was thinking about purchasing a strap to take some of the weight off of my arms. I looked on the YSL website and it appears that the large SDJ had d rings, but please correct me if I am wrong. Do you think the bag would be able to stay in good condition if all of the weight is placed on that one strap?

I mean, my neverfull never had any problems and I basically packed my entire house in that thing up until a year ago, but this is obviously a very different bag.
