What do you tell people who ask why not buy a fake?

I don't carry real bags so others think good things about me. I carry them for the quality and because I don't support the fakes industry. The people I know couldn't care less about the label.

when ppl ask me "why not get a fake, it's the same thing?", I say, "Um, cuz it's NOT." lol. then i may mention how even my DH can usually tell a Fashion District fake a mile away (lots of LV's cutoff, coloring weird, just overall off-looking, etc).

What's usually most convincing, though, is when I mention my own personal experience with buying a fake bag on ebay (i was naive and got duped, this was before i found tpf and the wonderful folks on the "authenticate this" threads). I bought a white leather "Prada" bag on ebay, and at first the bag seemed so authentic to me (even smelled like real leather, had "authenticity" card, dustbag, tags and everything). But then after like 3 or 4 uses the handles started fraying in a few places and the "paint" on the leather started coming off :wtf: Then I started to notice that the lining of the inside was not aligned properly, and the zipper-pulls looked really-cheap looking... :sad: I said to myself, there was NO WAY this bag is worth $50, (much less the $250 that I had paid for it), so it must be a fake! :mad: So, to make a long story short, i returned the bag to Paypal, and got my $$ back. :biggrin:

Soo, to the people who ask, "why not buy a fake"? I say "Well, for the same reason I wouldn't *purposely* spend any $$ to wear a piece of garbage on my arm, plus a stamp on my forehead that says "FAKE!" LOL. Cuz that's what it is, really...most people who notice bags at all will be able to tell it's a fake, and plus, the replicas are of VERY cheap quality (you may not notice it at first, but trust me, *Wal-mart* makes better bags.)

plus, there's the whole counterfeits-support-terrorism/child labor thing, but usually i don't go into that, as that makes ppl really defensive and all...

I know a rather wealthy woman who buys fakes and is convinced they look like the real thing (she buys lots of badly faked Gucci's). Once she said, look, this bag looks like the real thing and I only paid 50 euros. I replied "you have obviously not seen the authentic bag". She became rather offended and went on and on and on... so in the end I said: " Well, I guess you cannot tell between leather and plastic, wool and synthetic or silk and polyester...lucky you!". No, we are not friends:graucho: anymore...but she STARTED IT, laughing at my epi Mandara ...:hrmm:

that supporting a slave trade, child pornography and terrorist groups, including the mob and our own drug trade doesn't sit well with me. as a matter of fact, don't take it from me, lets go google it right now. it had my mother floored. absolutely speechless once she looked at the articles online with me. i didn't say another word.

plus, if you were an artist, making top dollar for your art. how would you feel if ppl were selling fakes of your stuff? as an artist myself, i can't condone buying a fake bc its just wrong in the art community!

That's really rude to ask, "why not buy a fake." They're just jealous because they, for whatever their reasons, couldn't get the real thing. I mean, unless they were GENUINELY clueless, but I mean come on... they know what they're trying to say!

I tell them i don't it because i feel so mutch better wearing a real purse tha a fake one. The quality are way much better, and you can smell the fake from a long distance, it looks so dumb.:yucky:

I don't bother evangelising - they'll come back with one of my other bad habits that supposedly funds some triad boss' Summer home and prostitute habit. Just tell them I felt like buying the 'real' thing - why buy RC Cola when you can get a Coke?

BTW: holy bump, Batman... really?

I really can't believe this is a topic...maybe as I can't imagine anybody who would actually say something like this in the first place...:thinking:
