I recently bought my first professional suit from Theory, it's charcoal, I got the jacket and pants. I bought some leather pumps to go with it but don't know what bag to buy... Is a black leather tote or briefcase preferable? Do you have any brands and styles to recommend?

Thank you :)

There are lots of classic shapes & styles.. A tote, a shoulderbag, satchel

Are you wanting to find a bag to use to carry laptop, office files etc?

Do you live near a big department store like Bloomies, Nordstrom's
Macy's etc? If so, just walk through & see what styles appeal to you..

It depends upon what you want to spend and whether you want leather, nylon/leather combo or just nylon. A black tote is good and you can slip a black clutch into it to use if you are going out after work. If you are just starting out, I would not go for a super expensive bag as it could work against you. Something stylish and mid priced is best.

I second that. Chanel would be way over the top. :goodpost:

If you're in a conservative business setting a black leather tote, no prominent logos is a classic look. If you can add a bit of flair, a colorful bag like red or cobalt blue, would be nice.

Coach have some great understated leather work bags. They have good sales too.

A classic Coach bag with a bit of basic care should stay in great shape for years until you want to upgrade.
I second Coach! I have a plain black leather bag from them I use every day for work. Big enough for my laptop and files (and all of the other junk i carry with me) and I have used it for years now with very little signs of wear.

Are you carrying files or papers daily, or is it just to go back and forth from home? Will you be taking transit or driving. Will you be meeting clients outside your office? For me it is about function, ease of carry and looking professional. Where you are in your career and the industry can also determine the perception of the brands of bags you carry.

I think briefcases, although sharp, are a bit outdated given the prevalence of toting around your laptop, hence a ton of silicon inspired tech bags like backpacks or slim cases.

Since I used a plan tote for my laptop, it frees up what I use as my daily work bag (Prada). Hermes also makes some beautiful professional looking bags. I agree that Coach (legacy line) makes some great looking sturdy bags. I had a coworker who used a nylon Longchamp to tote her laptop. It depends on your use and style preference.

Agreed that Chanel would not suit a work setting imo.

You could consider a Saint Laurent. Either Sac De Jour or a Monogramme Cabas, for example. Both bags come in different sizes, finishes and colours, so you could decide what you liked best.

As others have said, it depends on what your needs and uses are for the bag. Good luck :smile1:
