It's the 25th anniversary of the hit song recorded by several chart-topping recording artists, and it's as relevant today as it was back in 1985, according to it's co-producer, Quincy Jones. The proceeds of this re-release will go to benefit the people of Haiti. Some of the artists who will take part in this recording may include Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Will Smith, and Mya.

Stars Banding Together to Record New "We Are the World" for Haiti

The world still needs help.

It's been 25 years since Quincy Jones helped gather the biggest names in music to record "We Are the World," but the song is as relevant today as it was then.

Jones confirmed to me today that he's helping spearhead a new recording of the charity song with the proceeds going to help Haiti. The new version will be recorded on Monday in Los Angeles.

"It's the 25th anniversary and it's perfect timing," Jones said at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, where he was celebrating the launch of his new watch collection for Audemars Piguet. "It's not an accident, man. That's God. It will be 'We Are the World' for Haiti."

Jones declined to name which singers have committed themselves, but I can tell you..
.
The line-up may already include Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Will Smith, Jason Mraz, Sugarland, Sheryl Crow, Mya and teen sensation Justin Bieber, among others.

"I want to get a final list before I put it out." Jones said.

Director Paul Haggis will likely film Monday's recording session, a source confirms.
The original song, which benefited African famine relief, was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and co-produced by Jones and Michael Omartian. It featured Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Bob DylanRay Charles.

This isn't Jones' first undertaking to help the disaster-stricken Caribbean nation.
"I have two friends who are donating two half-million dollar power generators," he said. "Another friend…is going to rebuild the [presidential] palace. All his money, his crew and his design so they don't even have to think about it."

Jones' partnership with Audemars Piguet also includes a $1 million donation from the watch company to the Quincy Jones Foundation.

Meanwhile, Jones said he is not involved with the Grammy tribute to Michael Jackson, but revealed that he will opening up about the late King of Pop for an upcoming special on CNN

I like the concept, but I don't know if I like them re recording we are the world. Write a new song!

And Miley? :yucky:

I would rather see them release the version from MJ's memorial than this possible disaster! I think he'd be rolling in his grave over this.

^ I agree, they may have chosen too iconic a song - but whatever song it was, people will download it for sure, as its for such a needed cause.

Over here in the UK, Simon Cowell is currently getting everybody together to do a version of REMs Everybody Hurts -with all profits and tax going to the Haiti fund - I think this song is very apt.

I am only 29, but I am the world's biggest Lionel Richie fan. :shame: They cannot record that song without him!

I do think they should try a new song, but whatever brings in the money for this cause is just fine by me...as long as Heidi Montag isn't in the lineup!

They need to leave that song alone. It's fitting, but do you really mean to tell me that none of these people can write a hit song for a worthy cause??

Lionel Richie talked about this song and it's meaning at the Grammy's tonight. I wonder if that was done purposely to boost awareness of the song and remind everyone about it in preparation of the re-release?
