Water stains

So I'm not totally clear on how water stains happen (am posting this b/c the other rain thread made me think of this)

So sometimes when I get water on my handles, it dissapears. Other times, I get a faint water stain. What gives? How come some water is OK and others are harmful?

im not sure! the same things are happening to my poor mini hl!
and the more it patinas, the more it shows up!! aaaaaah
