I am going to the East Coast for 9 weeks on business. I will be commuting from NJ to NYC everyday by bus and will have a large backpack with my laptop, files and gym clothes. I don't want o carry a big purse as I will be toting around enough but I hate digging in my bag for cash and a metro card. It was suggested that I bring a small cross body but I was thinking about a wallet on a chain. I can use it when I go out at night or put it in my large tote on days off. What do you think?

It's great if it works for you. I think I would prefer a crossbody with a zipper. It's easier to get into, don't have to mess with a fussy clasp. I like being able to open it and feel for what I need without having to look or pull my purse up into my arms. Plus there's the other things you might want to have handier than your big backpack. Your phone, sunglasses, medication (I keep my inhaler handy), maybe a book for the ride, a bit of makeup, a hairbrush, etc. The WOC might be light and easy to carry but I'm not sure it would be that practical, especially if you plan to go from day to evening in the city.

Also, I'm jealous. I love love love NYC and would love to spend 9 weeks there....sigh. Work wouldn't be my first choice of things to do, but since I'm not independently wealthy, it would probably have to figure into the plan somewhere. I know you'll be working, but enjoy!

I think Paculina might be right; I'd pick something that can fit my super essential items I might need on the go. My usual attire for travel is a backpack and a crossbody bag; I usually go for Coccinelle Best Clutch or DKNY Mini Crossbody. The Coccinelle is still in production, comes in several colors and is great bang for buck - it costs well under 200€ and fits a ton despite being a slim design. I carry mini wallet, key holder, sunnies case, phone, even 8-inch tablet in mine. It can also double as a roomy clutch for evening outings. The design reminds me of Céline Trio, only less fussy.

If it is an obvious wallet , you make your self more of a target. I would suggest a smaller crossbody that a thief has to work harder to get something out of there by moving on to some one else instead.
