The squares are metal--possibly aluminum? There is a leather (possibly suede?) base underneath. The inside is quite worn.

The website’s a good idea, if it’s still the same company. I remember when Tano was super-popular here.
Love a good vintage hunt! You have to click around on the site for a live link but the site is dated 2020, yes hopefully the same company. By the size of the Tano thread they certainly were popular. It looks like they have had a good run, very popular in the 50s & 60 too.
