Hi! i am stuck between if i should spend the money on a new chanel m/l classic flap in cavier leather gold hardware or just purchase a vintage chanel in lambskin with 24k gold with the rest of the money put towards hermes (i love the lindy!) and/or a LV petite malle in black epi leather.

Any thoughts and suggestions? I probably would only purchase 1 bag from chanel in my life (if i dont get hooked haha!).

Chanel is definitely a slippery slope! I always said I’d only have one bag; I now have four in the space of two years. Two new and two vintage.

Personally, (if you will only have one), I think both bags have a different vibe and style, so I would choose whichever works best with your wardrobe.

Although I do alternate between the two so what do I know!! :giggle: I wear my new flaps on all occasions, but my vintage only on more casual days.

I like your innocence! That would never happen! Haha Chanel is like a drug. Especially if you start with vintage bags, you just want to collect them all.

My first Chanel is a 1 year old double flap caviar M/L ghw bag when I first bought it. It’s so precious that I never use it. I believe I have used it less than 5 times to date, but I’ll keep it for a lifetime. Most expensive bag to date. It is a great first bag and I recommend it!

I believe when you buy a vintage bag, you wouldn’t bother too much with taking care of it, as the first scratch is already there.

After my first Chanel, I bought 2 more modern styles. I then discovered vintage Chanel, I bought 4 vintage Chanels in a span of 3 months lol (17cm mini, 20cm mini, double flap, medium diana).

Dont get me started on vintage Dior and LV, that’s a slippery downhill slope!:graucho:

I wouldn't buy vintage for a simple reason. I think Chanel will not repair any bag unless you can prove you bought from them and most second-hand bags will be without a receipt. If you ever have a problem with your bag I don't know what you will do with it.
Hmmm I don’t foresee any of my vintages needing any repair. They were all in excellent condition when I bought them and I made sure of that. And the quality of the bags back then was really much better.

It also really depends on the style of vintage bag you choose. If you choose a vintage camera bag where the chain is affixed by a leather tab, the leather tab will break one day. https://www.avintagesplendor.com/how-to-restore-vintage-chanel-bag/

Even if I were to have an issue with any of my vintage bags, it would most probably be cosmetic damage, and not because the bag was falling apart. That would be an easy fix at leather surgeons.

I believe Chanel is still doing repairs on bags greater than 5 years old. You only need a receipt for two services: refurbishment and refinishing service. https://www.designer-vintage.com/en/stories/chanel-stops-repairing-bags-over-5-years-old

I definitely prefer a good mix of vintage and modern bags. This was my medium Diana that just arrived from Japan on Sunday. I also bought this stitched caviar medium single flap from 1997 to 1999 recently which has yet to arrive. The quilts are much flatter than my 26 series caviar double flap, but I like these styles as well. Both in 24k plate ghw which is so shiny! :yahoo:

Wow thanks for sharing and giving me confidence in buying vintage

Haha Myybags, do let us know what you decide to do. Personally I do feel buying a new flap in store first before getting a vintage is a good option. I wanted my first bag to be new. It all depends on your needs and current financing options. I would be lost in the world of vintage if I was a newbie (unless you can narrow it down to the bag you want).

Better to buy sooner than later- be it brand new or vintage!

My first Chanel flap was vintage, but I always found myself wanting a brand new flap. I eventually purchased a new one from the boutique, so my personal recommendation is that you wait for the new if that’s what your heart is really set on!

Whether you go vintage or new make sure you get a bag that you love and will use. I myself prefer vintage chanel. My first chanel bag was passed down from my mom to me when I was in HS and I still have it to this day and love it! I personally prefer the craftsmanship of vintage Chanel but modern styles are still luxurious! Good luck with your search!
